The World’s Largest Wildlife Crossing starts construction today ( Earth Day 2022)

Photo Credit / Living Habitats and National Wildlife Federation

Magnificent bridge for LA wildlife survival

In conjunction with the #SaveLACougars movement, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) and partners will begin the start of construction officially on April 22 to commemorate Earth Day. The groundbreaking will mark the world’s largest wildlife crossing which will cover 10 lanes of traffic on the very busy 101 freeway near Los Angeles. The project is currently slated for completion by early 2025 and has been dubbed as the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing.

The Wildlife crossing will cost nearly $90 million, with 60% of the price already covered by private donations and the remainder from public funds meant for conservation purposes. Philanthropist Wallis Annenberg donated $25 million to the project

The overpass proposal and funding was inspired by a Los Angeles cougar named P-22 who crossed two freeways to settle in Griffith Park. Unfortunately most wildlife aren’t as lucky to make it safely and roam as nature intended, and this crossing will finally represent a potential solution to this problem.

“This crossing will save the local mountain lion population from extinction, stand as a global model for urban wildlife conservation — and show us that it’s possible for a structure of this magnitude to be built in a such a densely populated urban area”

-Beth Pratt, California Executive Director for NWF

The positive environmental impact will be coupled with an aesthetic improvement that should also please humans, based on the renderings above. With some of the most congested freeways in the world in and around LA, this exception to the endless asphalt sprawl would be a welcome change from the status quo. The crossing is slated to be completed within three years.

‘Sharing Love With Others’ is Helping Los Angeles, Right Now: Vote and show support

Amazing, small but mighty non-profit orgs are out there. I recently became aware of one particularly effective group called ‘Sharing Love With Others‘. Based in LA and focusing on helping the local unhoused directly with care and, love.

The population in LA living outdoors is large. In California as a whole it is estimated that 49,000 are ‘chronically homeless’ and that LA County accounts for half of that number. While the local government, as well as Gov. Gavin Newsom are pledging to address the situation, the reality on the ground is in great need of being improved by direct, compassionate action.

This is where small local charities like ‘Sharing Love With Others‘ can produce immediate results with measurable success. Unlike bureaucratic, political proposals, a local grass-roots org uses resources and volunteering to help improve lives directly and immediately without intermediaries.

Founded by Maxine Sealey in 2019, geared to help the homeless community and the impoverished in Los Angeles and surrounding areas.

a quote from interview with Maxine in VoyageLA sheds some light on the origins of the group, “I was led to create SHARING LOVE WITH OTHERS after becoming the Outreach Director in 2004 of the church that I attend, while going through my personal hardship, after volunteering with other organizations that help the homeless, and after connecting people to free resources for their home such as refrigerators, bed, furniture and more. For some reason people would call on me to help, and I had the desire to help in whatever way I could.”

Supporting active, effective organizations like this is crucial, politically entrenched solutions notwithstanding.

KFC has launched the “Kentucky Fried Giving” Challenge to support local non-profit groups

Fortunately, you can support this incredible organization right now at zero-cost whatsoever.

The group is participating in the ‘Kentucky Fried Giving” challenge which will award a $60,000 grant to the non profit that gets the most votes in the challenge.

All you need to do is follow the link below and vote for Sharing Love with Others.

2 Years Ago – 6.4 Earthquake Rocks LA on Independence Day: Strongest Since ’99

https://lynxotic.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/LA_EarthQuake4.mov

Historic NEWS

LA shook on July 4, 2019 – felt from Vegas to the Pacific in largest quake since Northridge

A large rolling earthquake centered in Searles Velley, CA was felt all the way to LAX. The epicenter was in the vicinity of Ridgecrest, approximately 100 miles from downtown Los Angeles, in San Bernardino County.

Reports of people noticing the quake came from as far away as Las Vegas and all the way to Newport Beach. The tremblor was at first clocked at 6.6, but subsequently downgraded to 6.4 – still the biggest since the infamous Northridge earthquake that all local residents recall. Fortunately this one was centered in an relatively remote area and no significant damage has yet been reported.

Now Open: Apple’s Lavish New Store in the Heart of Downtown LA

Above: Photo Credit / Apple

A stunning historic renovation comes to life

The Apple Tower Theater is officially open and marks one of Apple’s most significant and iconic restoration projects. The company worked alongside restoration artists and the City of Los Angeles in order to preserve the theater which was originally designed back in 1927 by architect Charles Lee.

CEO Tim Cook was in attendance of the grand opening alongside Retail Chief Deirde O’Brien. He took many pictures and selfies with attendees and welcomed the first customers into the Downtown Los Angeles Store.

Customers were excited to explore the Apple Tower Theatre and took the opportunity to snap photos of the beautifully restored arches, as well as getting their hands on the latest products like the iMac, iPad Pro and new iPhone 12.

Though many ambitions and luxurious Apple Stores have be build, including the biggest in NYC, Apple Fifth Avenue, and more recently Apple Store Singapore (see video below), the new downtown LA location is unique in that it simultaneously reincarnates an amazing former mecca for filmmaking and Hollywood glamour and also reimagines it in a compatible and yet up-to-date style.

As the company has surpassed $2 trillion in market capitalization, and is the largest of the big tech giants, the emphasis on community, yet in a beautiful, luxurious setting, is befitting of this giant, yet often underestimated behemoth.

Apple Tower Theatre will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. The Tower is located on the corner of Eighth and Broadway: 802 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90014.

New Jason Statham Video or Deepfake TikTok Account? You Decide

Above:Photo Credit / MGM

Three and a half million likes in less than 24 hours? Sure, if you are Jason Stratham on TikTok. And it’s the first video on a brand new account. The only video on the account so far. And you are dancing while you divulge your stats.

Looking at the comments, however, nearly 70,000 of them, a large number are asking “is this real”. Deep-fakes are most definitely real. Several accounts used Tom Cruise Deep-fake video to try to spoof an official TikTok account for the star. And a few stray clips of Brad Pit at a script reading spawned a series of fake accounts trying to look like Brad’s personal “rogue” account.

But, wait, there’s also Billie Eilish who started a “secret” personal account in November 2020 and posted some fascinatingly bizarre ukulele footage, apparently just for kicks, as she surely has no need for more publicity. The account was so unique and, well, strange, that it was hard to imagine that it could be fake.

Sure enough, yesterday what appears to be an outtake from her recent music video with some hilarious captions and stickers popped up on the, mostly dormant, account and has since gone viral. All of which pretty much cements the “it’s definitely real” theory.

As for Jason Statham? We are going to go out on a limb here and say that he is following Billie Eilish’s lead and this is a real account. The fact that there is a single video with a full body dance clip of what absolutely appears to be the star is a tip-off. Secondly if this is his head deep-faked onto someone else’s body, that’s a pretty perfect body double.

Also, the original sound mix seems to indicate that there was method that went the extra mile.

What’s your take? Send us comments or your detective results and let us know if you think this is real, like we do, or if this is just some amazing wizardry at a next level of deep-fake-ness, which thousands of comment writers on TikTok seem to believe…

Beneath the sunlit glamour of 1985 LA lurks a relentlessly evil serial killer. In this true-crime story, two detectives won’t rest until they catch Richard Ramirez, who was eventually arrested for his terrible crimes.

A gradual climb up the internal Netflix chart has kicked the limited series up to #3 for the weekend. Warner Bros. police thriller ‘The Little Things’: When to watch in theaters and HBO Max

https://movietrailers.apple.com/movies/wb/the-little-things/the-little-things-trailer-1_h1080p.mov

Above: Official Trailer of ‘The Little Things’

Another serial killer thriller- how will this latest release stack up?

Another anticipated  HBO Max movie from Warner Brothers is “ The Little Things”. The movie stars not one, but three Oscar winners: Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto. Denzel Washington plays a Kern County Deputy Sheriff, Joe “Deke” Deacon, who joins forces with homicide sergeant Jim Baxter played by Rami Malek to search for a serial killer who’s terrorizing Los Angeles.

As they track the culprit, Baxter is unaware that the investigation is dredging up echoes of Deke’s past, uncovering disturbing secrets that could threaten more than just his case.  Jared Leto , plays a menacingly creepy Albert Sparma, a stringy hair, electrical repairman who is pegged as the suspected serial killer.

Those that got an early viewing of the movie have made mention that the film has elements of other serial killer movies including: “Seven” and “Zodiac”. As always, there are those that liked the movie and talk-up its all-star cast, while others have given it low ratings claiming it just did not hit the mark. Those that have the HBO Max streaming platform will get the chance to watch for a month after its release which is scheduled for the end of the January (2021).

Writer-director John Lee Hancock has been waiting over 20 years to put his neo-noir script of a classic Hollywood case onto the big screen. The film is set in the 1990’s and plays tribute to the old school nature of detective work, before cell phones and technological advances like DNA profiling became commonplace with investigative police work.

“The Little Things” debuts in theaters on January 29, and isavailable on the HBO Max streaming platform for 30 days from that date (as will be the case for all 2021 Warner Bros. theatrical titles).

LA fights back against the Coronavirus with its own secret weapon: open-air commerce

When stuck with coronavirus lemons, why not make lemonade?

In the continuing efforts to stop the spread of the coronavirus, businesses in Los Angeles are getting creative. After Gov. Gavin Newsom released new guidelines for beauty services such as hair salons, barbershops, nail salons and massage parlors that prohibit any of these services to be conducted indoors, but that they could do so in the open air, an epidemic of new ideas was unleashed.

Those that have large parking lots, or adjacent green areas that could be used, began to brainstorm ways to make this not only possible, but even an improvement. Like outdoor dining, gyms, barbershops, nail salons and more are all setting up makeshift tents, gazebos and even shaded spinning classrooms to prevent spreading the virus while still living life and conducting business.

While it can’t be called business as usual, some of the west side businesses near the beach have shown true inspiration in “takin’ it to the streets” and have jumped right into the spirit, particularly in the case of the CycleBar in Culver City. After transforming their parking lot into a spinning / stationary bike studio and collaborating with Anytime Fitness to build a provisional outdoor weight-room and workout area, the results are downright celebratory…

Through the spread of Covid-19 continues, a glimmer of hope can be seen in efforts to live life while staying safe

If not for the masks and face shields, one might think these are photos from a spring fitness festival in 2018, long before the pandemic had clipped our wings and made such activities a challenge or even a danger.

Nearby on 4031 Sepulveda, in Culver City, Active Barbers have similarly set up shop on the sidewalk with a stylish and festive looking row of outdoor canopies, each with a full-on barbers chair adjacent to all the tools of the trade. Once again, the masks worn by the barbers and clients are the only giveaway that this is not part of a larger outdoor summer celebration.

Rose Bowl in Pasadena featuring Drive-in Films during July

Another example of Angelenos taking things outdoors to find entertainment and relaxation is the Tribeca DRIVE-IN movie theater series at the Rose Bowl Stadium. Taking place during July on Thursday – Sunday. The Tribeca Film organization is also staging similar events all around the US this summer. In addition to Pasadena, CA events are planned for Orchard Beach – Bronx, NY, Nickerson Beach – Nassau County, NY, AT&T Stadium – Arlington, TX and Hardrock Stadium – Miami, FL.

These high profile venues are an addition to the wave of Drive-in theaters that have sprung up all over the US in response the the pandemic and the availability of large outdoor spaces that can be adapted for big-screen fun.

Drive-in Concert Series fights back against the dearth of live entertainment options

In another related California story, the LA Times chronicled the recent emergence of drive-in concerts at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. Once again it’s the safety benefits of the open California sea breezes that are at the core of the drive to live outdoors and free. Recent acts performing to a sea of cars included the LA based Ska-Funk-Punk band Fishbone along with Ozomatli.

Cars not directly encircling the stage where given an assist by large sports-venue like LED screens and an audio-assist via an FM radio signal, two hi-tech niceties that would have been missing if this were in the drive-in and drive-though era of 1962.

The producer of the concert series predicted that, sadly, a normal concert schedule with large indoor and outdoor venues being booked and where audiences do not have to be separated into cars, is likely not going to be a reality before 2022.

This reality, even if it turns out to be the worst case, is still an indicator of how all the business in this article are proving that necessity really is the mother of invention. With sales and traffic across some many industries “falling off a cliff” it will take drastic and wildly creative measures just for companies to survive, let alone prosper.

Indeed, the drive in concert series can only hope to bring in 10% of the usual number of people that would attend a similar bill at an indoor venue. The costs are higher and the income less, a formula, not for huge profit, but to make enough to keep all parties involved, from the artists to the producers to the production help and stage hands, above water until some kind of normalcy returns.

The overall impression from all these special business, however, is one of triumphant survival, resilience, health and strength. The exact qualities needed at this time in history, and not coincidentally, the same for which LA is known, along with Hollywood Movies, throughout the world.

Hollywood Blvd. Walk of Fame Redesign looks Great but Faces Challenges

Photo / Gensler / Studio-MLA

According to Locals, a Makeover is a Must

The epicenter of the entertainment industry, Hollywood Boulevard has been one of Los Angeles’ biggest tourist attractions for over a hundred years. It’s glamorous Walk of Fame, particularly near the intersection with Vine Street, is iconic and has been the focus of many sensational events and occasions throughout the years.

As dazzling as Hollywood may be to tourists, though, Angelinos have had many complaints about the famed street’s architecture and organization over the years, so much so that the location has undergone several aesthetic transformations during the past few decades.

Now, Los Angeles City Council and specifically Hollywood District representative Mitch O’Farrell has been pushing for a complete overhaul of the area. This renovation would incorporate several changes to the street’s layout, but it would principally offer increased sidewalk space for an improved pedestrian experience.

Hollywood’s Walk of Fame is notoriously crowded. One can hardly appreciate the Stars for all the people walking over them. By widening the sidewalk, people will be able to admire the monuments with comfort, but also walk down the street without having to dodge so many bodies.

Of course, the drawback to a larger sidewalk is decreased road space. Traffic is bad enough in Los Angeles as it is, and some fear that with a wider sidewalk, a narrower street would terribly back up the cars along Hollywood Boulevard. Perhaps this is yet another initiative on LA’s behalf to latently promote public transportation or deincentivize independent driving.

That being said, California (and Los Angeles in particular) enters into 2020 with some bold environmental plans. The Golden State has daring ambitions to go carbon neutral well ahead of the rest of the nation and to drastically decrease its emissions in the coming years. The state has targeted an increased use of electric cars as a paramount means of attaining these goals, but obviously, more action is needed if they truly desire to reach their hefty objectives.

Photo / Gensler / Studio-MLA

Environmental Considerations Should be at the Center of the Planning

Thus, the renovation of Hollywood Boulevard should be seen as an opportunity to make the neighborhood a more eco-friendly urban environment. Unfortunately, not much has been said about this so far. The prospective designs for the updated area—spearheaded by Gensler and Studio-MLA architecture firms—do involve more open air space and trees, though.

This is a good start, but the redesign could also seek ways to incorporate solar panels, increased vegetation, and carbon absorbing surfaces into the landscape. A sleek style certainly does wonders for the street’s aesthetic, but that does not mean that the renovation cannot be functional and progressive at the same time.

Furthermore, there is also a political question as to weather or not refurbishing Hollywood Boulevard at all is the best use of Los Angeles’ taxpayer dollars. Other neighborhoods in the community—South Central, Downtown, or Skid Row for examples—have far worse infrastructure and definitely require more immediate attention.

Likewise, LA’s public transportation system has been highly criticized for decades. If the local government is seeking an urban planning initiative, perhaps it could try refining the city’s metro system for greater accessibility and use.

The obvious argument against all of this is that brushing up the Walk of Fame will increase activity in one of the city’s central commercial hubs. This will help the local economy, eventually earning the city greater funds that it can redistribute to some of LA’s more desperate regions or issues.

It is a strange rewriting of the trickle-down-economics plan that was seldom more than political speech fodder. Nevertheless, Los Angeles already has $4 million in seed money for the project, while some believe that such funds are better placed directly towards more pressing and important causes.

Although the Walk of Fame redevelopment plan has been talked about for months, it is still only in its infancy. It has a long way to go, but hopefully, those in charge of it will not overlook environmental and social justice opportunities when they consider the project’s architectural, political, and ethical implications.

Los Angeles Aims For 25% Less Greenhouse Gas Emissions By 2028: Electric Vehicles Are The Key

LA Takes Tackling Smog and CO2 Emissions Seriously

Technology leaders from the city of Los Angeles recently announced what they are calling the Zero Emission 2028 Roadmap 2.0. In this outline, the leaders propose a plan by which the bustling metropolis reduces its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% within the next eight years—an ambitious and unprecedented goal that outdoes both the California State and Paris Climate Accord proposals.

Los Angeles is known as a progressive place, filled with creative people willing to adapt to new ideas and fight for just causes. Nevertheless, the SoCal city is also known for its soul crushing traffic. Even with four million residents, finding an Angelino without reason to complain about the town’s constantly congested crisscrossed freeways and lack of reliable public transportation is nearly impossible.

The Californians who devised this plan were not unaware of LA’s traffic issues. Since Many of them live in the city, these tech leaders can tell from the air pollution alone that vehicles are Los Angeles’ heaviest contributors to carbon emissions. If they are serious about their plan, which appears to be the case, then they will have to do something fast about all the cars and trucks smogging up the roads.

The obvious solution would be to create a more effective mass transit system in Los Angeles. However, with an infrastructure unfit for trains and countless failed attempts to move LA drivers onto buses, such a change is unlikely to catch on now. Instead, the planners are looking to the future of electric vehicles for a possible answer to the city’s pollution problems.

The Zero Emission 2028 Roadmap 2.0 focuses heavily on LA’s transition towards EVs. Specifically, by 2028, the plan aims for EVs to account for 80% of all vehicles sold in the city. Simultaneously, it wants LA and the surrounding area to create more EV-compatible infrastructure and zero-emission goods, rebranding the City of Angels as the EV Capital of the World.

City Proposed Solutions as Federal and State Level Options Failed

Of course, not all vehicles emit equally. If Los Angeles wants to achieve its goal by 2028, then it first needs to attack the heavy-duty, gas-guzzling vehicles—buses and trucks. Luckily, as of this year especially, there are many plus-sized EVs for the city to choose from. Tesla recently released the Cybertruck, and many even larger zero-emission vehicles are on the way from a wide variety of car and truck manufacturers. The California Air Resource Board is even proposing an Advanced Clean Truck regulation, which would require one out of every five trucks sold in the state by 2030 to be zero-emission models.

Earlier this year, however, the state of California lost a battle against the Trump administration (as well as a few car manufacturers) for the right to set its own emissions standards. While the Golden State was denied the right to hold itself to a higher ecological standard than the federal government mandates, individual cities have a little more wiggle room. Therefore, Los Angeles is not just creating these standards for itself; it is hoping that these efforts will inspire other municipalities in California and around the nation to follow suit. If the federal government will not solve the problem, and the state governments are barred from taking action, then perhaps it is up to the local governments to evoke change from the bottom up.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is in full support of the plan. Known to be an environmentally sensitive politician, Garcetti proposed a Green New Deal to the city back in April, outlining ways for LA to combat climate change. The Zero Emission 2028 Roadmap 2.0 is therefore in his wheelhouse, as it accelerates the already ambitious conservation goals set out in the previous proposal. Also supporting the plan are the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) and the Transportation Electrification Partnership (TEP) as well as private sector partners Tesla, BMW, Audi, BYD, Greenlots, and Proterra.

Climate Change fuels California Wildfires as Photochemical Smog evolves into Smoke in LA

Photo / Adobe stock

Pollution in DTLA from the 60s to Now: Smoke is the New Smog

Throughout the nineteen sixties, seventies, and eighties, a dark layer of photochemical smog clouded downtown Los Angeles. Produced by carbon emissions, this toxic smog came to define the city in many unflattering ways. Today, the smog is not as noticeable, however, a new kind of cloud has arrived to mask the face of La-La-Land yet again.

This time around, the cloud is composed of smoke from wildfires, and while this leftover smolder from burning forests may not be as immediately caustic as yester-decades’ smog, it could be more dangerous all the same, for it is a sign of California’s increasing vulnerability in the presence of the climate crisis.

Seasonal Wildfires in California Exacerbated and Turned Catastrophic by Climate Crisis

Wildfires in California, like hurricanes in the Deep South or blizzards up north, are somewhat seasonal. After a long, hot, and dry summer, the fires are only now starting to pick up, with an inordinate number of them taking place in the mountains around L.A. since the beginning of autumn. The region’s exceptionally arid landscape this time of year only helps the fires grow and travel at faster rates.

The reasons for these wildfires can vary, from natural causes to someone dropping a cigarette in the wrong place at the wrong time. Many of them are sparked by something immediate and unfortunate. However, their range, frequency, and ferocity can be linked to global warming—especially over the past few years, as the fires have become more intense and the effects of the climate crisis have been increasingly perceptible.

Indeed, a simple wayward cigarette could ignite a wildfire, but how much damage that fire does is determined in part by something far more elemental. As the climate crisis heats up the earth, things naturally become more flammable. The ecosystem is meant to respond to temperature spikes with additional moisture. Unfortunately, we have not experienced such compensation yet, and with the climate crisis being an unnatural phenomenon, it is unwise for us to expect the planet to respond in natural ways.

Wildfire Prevention is More than Putting Out a Spark, it’s Environmental, and California’s is Highly Flammable

Thus, a small spark can easily kindle a fire that quickly spreads over dry foliage with the wind. Although Los Angeles itself is celebrated as a land of perfect weather, its surrounding canyons produce gusts of wind up to 80 miles per hour. Because climate change has been significantly limiting nature’s innate defense mechanisms, the average area affected by wildfires has increased almost four-fold over the past few decades.

Likewise, longer droughts are also making California’s fire season lengthier. The season is an estimated two months longer than it was in the 1970s, and the longer the season, the more destructive it can be. California’s six most intense seasons on record have all occurred in the past decade, and fifteen of the twenty most extreme individual fires have all taken place since the year 2000.

Official Red Flag Warnings, Evacuations, and Power Outages? Only a Precursor to Future Extremes

Just last week, the fires caused the National Weather Service to issue its first extreme red flag warning ever. A testament to how bad California’s fires are, this unprecedented warning shows that the recent wildfires are on par with some of the worst storms and tornadoes in our country’s history. In fact, they may be even more treacherous.

Californians and Angelinos in particular have already faced evacuations and power outages as results of the fires—and that is just over the past few weeks. President Trump, rarely a champion of progressive environmental policies, has hardly addressed the issue as California’s state government scrambles to combat the blazing infernos on its own. Despite the situation’s intensity, though, it is but a bleak microcosm of what the future may look like if the climate crisis continues to go unchecked by politicians.

From Smog to Smoke, the Only Difference is the Extent of our Unnecessarily-Long Relationship with Pollution

The fires are at their worst in the canyons and hills surrounding Los Angeles, but from downtown, residents can notice the smoke blocking the mountains on the horizon. The air is filled with the pungent smell of burning wood and the skyline becomes hazier each day, returning the city to its smog-infested image of former decades.

Given that the smog was the result of fossil fuel burning and the fires are fueled by the climate crisis today, we can see that their resemblance is familial, and that the smoke from the California’s wildfires are the deformed son, the resurrected corpse, the Frankenstein’s monster of the undead smog and carbon emissions that we continue to carelessly release into our planet’s atmosphere.
