The Pristine Future: Why Science Fiction Abandons Oil and Fossil Fuels

The future is clean because all the oil is gone

In the realm of science fiction, visions of the future often gleam with pristine, utopian landscapes and gleaming cities.

One striking commonality among these futuristic portrayals is the conspicuous absence of oil and fossil fuels, the once-dominant energy sources of our present.

But why do sci-fi creators consistently envision a world where such primitive methods have been left behind? The answer lies in the belief that advanced technology and futuristic civilizations would never rely on such archaic energy sources.

The Dawn of Futuristic Energy

In the world of science fiction, the distant future is synonymous with breathtaking technological advancements.

Spacecraft traverse galaxies with ease, cities float in the sky, and robots perform intricate tasks effortlessly. In these fantastical worlds, oil and fossil fuels appear as relics of the past, resigned to the history books of an era long gone.

The driving force behind this visionary shift lies in the very essence of futuristic technology.

Science fiction writers and filmmakers envision advanced civilizations with highly sophisticated energy solutions that surpass the limitations of oil and fossil fuels. The idea is that such primitive methods, while once integral to our world, would be rendered obsolete by superior alternatives.

The Limitations of Oil and Fossil Fuels

Science fiction creators recognize the inherent shortcomings of oil and fossil fuels as energy sources. These resources are finite and subject to depletion, leading to resource wars and geopolitical tensions in our present reality.

They emit greenhouse gases, contributing to climate change and environmental degradation. In contrast, the future they imagine necessitates cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions to ensure the survival and prosperity of advanced civilizations.

Furthermore, the imaginative worlds of science fiction are driven by concepts like interstellar travel and space exploration. These endeavors demand extraordinary amounts of energy, making the reliance on oil and fossil fuels simply impractical.

For the creators of sci-fi, such primitive methods would be incapable of powering the fantastic technological marvels required to explore the cosmos.

The Paradigm Shift: Futuristic Energy Solutions

Science fiction offers a glimpse into the potential of renewable and advanced energy sources.

In these visionary worlds, technologies like antimatter reactors, fusion power, zero-point energy, or even harnessing energy from celestial bodies are imagined as the primary means of powering civilizations.

These theoretical energy sources, while still speculative in our present time, are perceived as the logical progression beyond our current reliance on oil and fossil fuels.

Moreover, as the genre explores themes of progress and evolution, it assumes that futuristic civilizations would have unlocked the secrets of limitless, sustainable energy.

By embracing these advanced energy solutions, the sci-fi future avoids the pitfalls of pollution, environmental degradation, and resource scarcity.

Reflections and Aspirations

Beyond technological feasibility, the futuristic portrayal of clean energy also reflects our collective aspirations for a better world.

Science fiction often serves as a mirror to society, reflecting our hopes and dreams for the future. By depicting advanced civilizations free from the shackles of fossil fuels, sci-fi inspires a collective longing for a more sustainable and harmonious existence.

In essence, science fiction presents a vision of a world where human ingenuity has transcended the limitations of our present reality.

The rejection of oil and fossil fuels in these fictional realms becomes a symbolic representation of our yearning for a cleaner, brighter future—one where technology coexists with nature in harmony.

An urgent meaning for today

While science fiction may currently be a realm of imagination, its vision of a future free from oil and fossil fuels serves as an inspiration and a call to action for our own world.

As we grapple with the challenges of climate change and the urgency to transition to renewable energy, these futuristic dreams remind us that there is a path beyond our dependence on finite resources.

The shift to cleaner energy solutions is not a distant fantasy; it is an attainable reality that requires dedication, innovation, and global cooperation.

By drawing on the visions of science fiction, we can fuel our determination to build a sustainable future—one where the landscapes are pristine, and the energy that powers our world aligns with the marvels of the imagination.

Only then can we take confident steps toward turning the clean energy dreams of science fiction into the breathtaking reality of our own future.

Moloch Reimagined: Tracing the Malevolent Entity through Mythology and Modern Perils

Everything, everywhere, all at once things are looking scary…

These words echo the pervasive fear that Moloch, the demon, has instilled across cultures and epochs. A dark and ominous figure, Moloch’s name resonates through the annals of mythology, religious texts, and literature, evoking malevolence and sacrificial rituals. But beyond the ancient tales, the enduring fascination with Moloch finds uncanny parallels in the daunting challenges of our modern world.

Origins of Moloch:

Tracing Moloch’s origins reveals an ancient deity revered in Canaanite and Semitic cultures. Worshiped with chilling devotion, Moloch demanded the ultimate price—the lives of innocent infants, immolated as offerings. Archaeological evidence and ancient texts shed light on this haunting practice, spreading through regions like Carthage with Phoenician settlers.

Malevolent Entity in Religious Texts:

The Hebrew Bible holds accounts of Moloch’s abominable presence. Leviticus and the Book of Jeremiah recount sacrifices of children to appease Moloch, a pagan god. Prophets vehemently condemned such practices, denouncing them as an affront to the one true God.

Literary Examples:

In John Milton’s “Paradise Lost,” Moloch emerges as a fallen angel, wielding a warrior-like spirit against Heaven. Fierce and revengeful, Moloch’s pride-driven actions serve as a cautionary tale of the dangers of arrogance and blind obedience.

Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl” takes Moloch from the realm of deities to that of industrial society. In a metaphorical twist, Moloch embodies the voracious appetite of consumerism, devouring souls in the relentless pursuit of profit.

H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos weaves Moloch into a tapestry of cosmic horror. A fearsome demon, Moloch personifies chaos and malevolence, contributing to an eerie atmosphere in Lovecraft’s stories.

Modern Manifestations of Moloch:

As the ages have turned, Moloch’s concept metamorphoses into a metaphorical entity, embodying contemporary malevolence and exploitation. Though not directly linked to the ancient deity, Moloch finds relevance in modern challenges.

Consumerism and Materialism stand as symbols of rampant Moloch in today’s society. The insatiable hunger for profit leads to environmental exploitation and disregards ethical considerations.

Technological Advancements bring forth ethical dilemmas akin to Moloch’s temptation. The pursuit of progress may sacrifice ethical considerations in AI, privacy, and autonomous weapons development.

Societal Inequality and Exploitation mirror ancient sacrificial practices. The concentration of wealth and power, sacrificing the vulnerable for the privileged, perpetuates oppression.

Political and Ideological Extremism advocates for sacrificing liberties and human rights for perceived greater goods. Moloch-like ideologies prioritize agendas over the well-being of citizens.

Loss of Human Connection and Empathy epitomizes modern Moloch. The pursuit of efficiency detaches humans from genuine interactions, leading to social isolation.

Present-day Parallels and Connections:

Climate change, nuclear war, and mass extinction loom as existential Molochs. Humanity’s actions endanger the environment and perpetuate conflict, risking global catastrophe.

Moloch is not exclusive to any one tradition. Across cultures, figures like Baal Hammon, Tiamat, Thanatos, Mephistopheles, Mara, and Ahriman embody similar malevolence, guiding societies through their cyclical rise and fall.

As humanity faces modern Molochs, the call for reflection and action grows. Climate change’s wrath reflects Moloch’s destructive tendencies, while nuclear war mimics ancient sacrifices for greater ambitions. As technology advances, the temptation to sacrifice ethical values to progress evokes Moloch’s lure.

In the cyclical concept of Yugas, Moloch’s presence remains timeless, extending from ancient rituals to contemporary global challenges. It serves as a cautionary symbol, compelling us to confront the malevolence within and around us.

Perhaps, amidst the darkness of Moloch, humanity finds its true test—to transcend and seek a brighter future, united in purpose and compassion. The ancient demon’s legacy reminds us that within these trials lie the seeds of transformation, offering hope that we can emerge wiser, stronger, and more resilient. For in the face of Moloch, we learn that the courage to face malevolence and forge a better world is humanity’s ultimate strength.

Apple near deal to produce film of Michael Lewis Book on Sam Bankman-Fried & FTX Collapse

In an incredible coincidence, Lewis had access before and during the drama

Michael Lewis book on Sam Bankman-Fried & FTX is near a deal with Apple. With competition from Amazon and Netflix – the film of the book on the fiasco is likely to be an Apple Feature film exclusive.

The fast moving story of the collapse of the one-time crypto billionaire wunderkind is about to go into overdrive. Apparently, as per a story in Deadline, Michael Lewis, of “The Big Short” and “MoneyBall” fame spent nearly six months with Bankman-Fried, ostensibly writing a very different story, one that has morphed into the scoop of the century as he watched the collapse of FTX and its founder’s world up close, pen in hand.

Rumors have it that Adam McKay, director of “The Big Short” and “Don’t Look Up” will eventually be attached, but for now, it appears that Apple has outbid both Amazon and Netflix for the feature film rights to the story.

A shocking and riveting story takes yet another twist

The story is of Sam Bankman-Fried & FTX’s rise and fall, with his personal estimated net worth crashing from a short lived peak at over twenty billion, to his current situation with zero and facing possible charges after resigning as CEO as FTX filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The unfolding drama has been hot and the details spewing out in the media and TikTok with a ferocious fervor, and now, with the author who has shown himself to be particularly adept at telling complicated financial stories and making them human and understandable on board, whew, it just got bigger.

The incredibly fortuitous coincidence that the book was six Months in the writing already as the historic collapse unfolded is likely to make for a once in a lifetime cinematic event.

Many have already called the FTX collapse “bigger than Madoff” or the greatest company collapse in history, and now the larger than life rise and fall will be chronicled both in an upcoming guaranteed bestseller, and in the, likely to be, Apple branded feature film.

Ridley Scott to Produce ‘The Infinite Machine’ ETH Origin Story from Camila Russo’s Book

The future of Ethereum, DAOs, Defi and Web3 set to become mainstream with movie tracing its history

Ridley Scott’s production company, Scott Free Productions, is slated to produce a feature film based the book, which tells the story of Ethereum, ‘The Infinite Machine‘ written by cryptocurrency crusader and journalist Camila Russo, and has Shyam Madiraju attached as director. Tom MoranVera Meyer, and Alejandro Miranda are also onboard, according to Deadline.

With Ridley Stott’s credits running the gamut from ‘Blade Runner‘, to ‘The Last Duel’, to Alien, to Gladiator, and too many more to count, plus production credits for Scott Free that are no less impressive, the upcoming films appears set to be big.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin will play prominently in the story, showing the early and incredible initial launch, inspired by the self-taught 19 year-old, into what is now the world’s second largest cryptocurrency (Ether) and, according to Ethereum.org is a technology that’s home to digital money, global payments, and applications. The current ‘market cap’ for Ethereum is nearly $400 billion.

The story up to the present day is fascinating enough, with the meteoric rise of Ethereum from the founding in 2015 to the announcement of this project. Particularly noteworthy is the connection between the Ethereum blockchain technology and the invention of NFTs (Non-fungible tokens), DeFi (decentralized finance), D.A.O.s (Decentralized autonomous organizations) and more.

Camila Russo, author of “The Infinite Machine”, also founded TheDefiant( thedefiant.io ) which “curates, digests, and analyzes all the major developments in decentralized finance, so that you can stay informed and smart about the most cutting-edge and fastest-changing corner of crypto and finance” according to the site itself.

The film project has already started to make waves and accomplish meaningful buzz in a deep layered, totally coherent approach to its creation. Namely, the fact that part of the fundraising for the film is taking place via NFT collections. This bold move has been incredibly well timed and successful, with the first @ETHMovie collection selling out completely within 28 hours and raising $670,000 in the process.

This funding, along with subsequent NFT collections offered are being managed via The Infinite Machine DAO community treasury, along with traditional film financing techniques. The DAO is, itself, the executive producer of the movie.

According to the official site for the film, the NFT collection sales will be equally distributed amongst the 36 intervening artist which will receive 22.5% of the budget. 10% will be sent to a community treasury pool to fund the DAO, and the 67.5% will be used for the movie.

It’s incredibly exciting to have Ridley Scott and the crew at Scott Free produce the movie of The Infinite Machine alongside us. I can’t imagine a better team to turn the riveting story about the people behind the most revolutionary technology since the internet into a feature film that will capture the hearts of our generation.

Camila Russo as per ‘DeaDline’

This groundbreaking funding mechanism, in this case for a movie that is intended to “become a blockbuster movie for the mainstream”, is part and parcel of the radical yet optimistic and hopeful changes that DAOs, NFTs, DeFi all were created to achieve, within the greater context of Web3 and the Ethereum blockchain itself. In other words, making this film is itself proof that the subject matter is alive, kicking and becoming more real (and dangerous, to some) in real time.

Traditional funding and monetary distribution channels, from the creative genesis of an idea (in this case the book) to a fully formed commercially released product and its proceeds, are by comparison, woefully inadequate and generally corrupt and unfair, according to many artists and creators super-pumped for the transition to these new methods made possible by Ethereum, blockchain, and soon, Web3.

So from the story, in both book and movie, to the NFT collections, the the DAO created to executive produce and partially fund the film, there is a thread of real-life proof-of-concept running throughout.

That proof is that, far from being a far flung, possible flash-in-the-pan, the entire saga, beginning with 19-year-old Vitalik Buterin’s idea to expand the potential of block chain, is destined to come to spectacular fruition, and sooner than you might believe.

Culminating the relatively short history of the last 7 years, all the way to the present day explosion of work, massive capital investments and development of Ethereum, along with its various applications and use-cases, we could be inexorably headed toward a moment in the near-future when the film will crash head-on into the realization of the very dream scenario it depicts. Oh boy howdy.

Below, the breakdown of the The Infinite Machine DAO funding plan:

Before the Movie Budget is Covered

Distribution of primary and secondary sales:

  • 22.5% in an equal basis amongst the 36 intervening artists
  • 10.0% to a community treasury pool used to seed The Infinite Machine DAO
  • 67.5% to cover the movie budget up to $16M. That number may be reduced depending on the amount of funds raised via traditional means.

After the Movie budget is covered

Distribution of secondary trading fees and any other revenues from all collections:

  • 22.5% will be received by the artists in this collection
  • 25.0% will be received by the NFT Collection core team and contributors
  • 52.5% will be used to fund a community pool to seed The Infinite Machine DAO

Camila Russo spent eight years at Bloomberg covering the Argentine market (bonds, stocks, FX) for 4+ years based in Buenos Aires; she wrote about European stocks with a focus on Southern Europe in Madrid; analyzed macro emerging markets moves for the Markets Live blog in New York; and was one of the most prolific and dedicated cryptocurrency reporters.

This upcoming Horror-slash-Gore-slash Sci-Fi explores a future world where humans live in a more synthetic environment, forcing the body to undergo new mutations and transformations.  And get this, in this world, the body has become so strong, that pain has been eliminated, which, strangely, now the characters experiencing pain through acts of self-mutilation and surgery has become the new “sex” (in other words pleasurable).   Viggo Mortensen plays a performance artist named Saul Tenser, where he showcases the changing displays through the various forms of surgical alterations that his body undergoes.

If you’ve got the stomach for it, or an appetite for scaring yourself silly, this is the railer for you.

*Warning* the trailer is a bit much to watch if you are like most that don’t necessarily enjoy seeing people cut into themselves.

“Crimes of the Future” stars Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux, as well as Kristen Stewart and Scott Speedman.  When the movie was originally thought up, fun fact, Nicolas Cage was meant to play the lead, however due to the project being shelved for several years, recasting was done with Viggo.

Barbie Movie Features Margot Robbie Pretty and Very Pink: Trailer to Come

Back in 2019 Greta Gerwig (known for work on “Lady Bird”, “Little Women” and “The Squid and the Whale”) and Noah Baumbach signed on to write a live-action Barbie movie for Warner Bros.  By the looks of it, giving by a sneak-peak that it’s giving hot pink, retro 80’s Barbie vibes.

Some might find it anomalous that Robbie, famed for, among others, being Harley Quinn of suicide squad, a role that had the feel of a life-time type-casting dream, so Barbie might seem a stretch for those that feel married to her portrayal of a more, shall we say, dangerous female anti-hero.

And yet, perhaps it’s brilliant. Certainly the photo, released as a teaser at CinemaCon gives out a vibe that is spot-on for an inspired casting take on the doll come to life. Unfortunately the official trailer is still to come, so we’ve provided a “first look” video with clips from her that kind of visualizes a fantasy take in the meantime.

Alongside Margot Robbie as Barbie, Ryan Gosling will play the iconic boyfriend Ken. There are also a handful of crazy talent with fellow cast members to include: Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Simu Lui, Issa Rae, Michael Cera and Kate McKinnon.

The plot details for the film have not been shared and kept quite mum as of now, so we may have to wait closer to the release date next year to see Gerwig’s adaptation.  Currently “Barbie” is scheduled for theatrical release on July 21, 2023.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Screening with Tom Cruise Kills It at CinemaCon: Press is Ecstatic

During a screening at CinemaCon, Paramount held a debut for “Top Gun: Maverick” and thus far it has been enthusiastically reviewed, to put it mildly. Attended by film critics, some of the first ravings of the sequel included: “the perfect blockbuster”, “a total banger” and “a masterful adrenaline rush”.

Looking at the trailer, which is out now (below) it is clear to see where some of the excitement is coming from. The photography in the action sequences has a realistic feel that, when using the original film from 1986 as a reference, clearly shows an amazing upgrade. On a big screen at CinemaCon these sequences must have been amazing.

There’s also the sense that the storyline used Tom Cruise’s age in a clever way, turning it into an advantage throughout, and , as a result, turning the film into a sympathetic one for anyone older than 25 (most reviewers, in other words).

Finally, one has to wonder if the current situation in Ukraine, with the same enemy from the ‘Top Gun’ in 1986 – MiG-28s fighters from Russia (Soviet Union) played a role in the excited reactions in any way?

Not having seen the entire film, without any spoiler alerts, there could be an emotional connection with the sad and scary enemy that invaded Ukraine and the projected heroic power and potential of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, to counter that threat, were they to be real.

Please take this with a grain of salt, it could be way off base. But one thing is certain – the critics who’s reactions are already out there are wildly positive on the film and are predicting that it will be a huge memorial weekend hit, just for starters.

The film shows “Maverick” still pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot.  The official plot synopsis says “Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.”

More than 30 years since the original 1986 action drama “Top Gun” has been released, the sequel starring Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell played by the one-and-only Tom Cruise is coming to the big screen .

Val Kilmer and Jennifer Connelly, also original actors from the first film, return as well. Additionally some new characters will be introduced which will be played by: Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Monica Barbara and Glen Powell.

“Top Gun: Maverick” will be held for theatrical release starting May 27 and will most likely have streaming capabilities on Paramount+ following its theatrical run time.

‘The Northman’ with Alexander Skarsgård: Viking Vengeance at Epic Scale

“The Northman” is a bloody Scandinavian Viking’s tale of revenge.  The film follows  Prince Amleth (played by Alexander Skarsgård) who vows to avenge his father’s death at the hands of his uncle.

While, perhaps, not everyone waits with baited breath for the next bloody Viking saga, this particular outing might have a shot at a wider audience due to the elevated filmmaking and stunning visuals.

The trailer (below) will give you a taste of this, and based on how you feel once having viewed it you may have a better idea of why you might want to visit a theater (later this month, only in theaters) to get the full treatment.

Along with Skarsgård comes a hard-hitting cast including: Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hake (plays King Aurvandil), Anya Taylor-Joy, Claes Bang and William Dafoe (witch).

Reviews for the film, directed by  Robert Egger, are coming out now, since the theatrical release of the film will hit screens at the end of the month. Rotten Tomatoes calls it “bold, unflinching and visually breathtaking”. Eggers is known for the historical fables / period setting pieces that push the genre, such as in his previous films, for example, “The Lighthouse” and “The Witch”.

“The Northman” is set for theatrical release starting April 22.

‘WeCrashed’: Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway in Apple TV pic on Epic Rise and Fall of WeWork

Above: Photo / Apple

Jared Leto plays WeWork cofounder Adam Neumann and Anne Hathaway plays his wife Rebehak in the new Apple TV+ drama “WeCrashed”. The series will chronicle of how the company’s skyrocketed towards a $47 billion valuation in less than a decade, then quickly and dramatically plummeted

Neumann, who served as CEO for the company from 2010 to 2019 and later resigned was well known for his megalomania and wild pronouncements of ambition. Becoming ‘King of the world’ was not beyond his imagination. According to reports at the time, his “eccentric behavior” was one of the main reasons he was pressured to step down.

The series is part drama for the entertaining over-the-top reenactments of the antics and impulses of Neumann (Leto) and part exploration of the era of insane exploits at start-ups, as well as part love story, showing their crazy ups, downs, best and worst of times while WeWork is being built.

Not the first to tackle this subject matter, after 2021’s WeWork: Or The Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn, which was a documentary feature, this star driven Apple TV+ series is clearly aimed at being entertaining first, but still is a thoughtful exploration of the excesses and the era that produced them.

Along with the recent trial of Elizabeth Holmes who was found guilty on four out of 11 federal charges relating to her own megalomaniacal fraud spree at billion dollar start-up Theranos, there’s a building oeuvre of film work, such as HBO’s: The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley chronicling the era of excess that is still ongoing.

Apple TV+ is also getting in on the Theranos action. In an upcoming release Jennifer Lawrence will again team up with director Adam McKay (Don’t Look Up, also with JLaw), for Bad Blood. Release date is not yet known, only that it will be based on Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by Pulitzer Prize-winner John Carreyrou.

“WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork” will debut its first three episodes on Apple TV+ starting March 18 with new episodes airing every week on Friday.

‘The Lost City’ with Sandra Bullock, Brad Pitt and Channing Tatum: an Entertaining, Trashy-Fun Romp

Loretta Sage (played by Sandra Bullock) is a best-selling author, known for her popular romance novels. Most of her writing career has been spent behind closed doors, alone, creating love stories about her hero character named “Dash”.

All of her book covers have Dash portrayed by model Alan (played by Channing Tatum). During a book tour to promote her latest release, Loretta brings Alan alongside, although she really can’t stand him and thinks he’s just a dumb male model but her female fanbase love him.

On the tour, Loretta is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (played by Danielle Radcliffe) who thinks she may have the secrets to ancient lost city’s treasure as she’s written in her book. Alan who wants to prove he is not just the cover model for the character Dash, but can be a real life hero sets out to rescue Loretta.

If you are wondering why Brad Pitt is not mentioned in the plot summary, he is, alas, in a cameo appearance that came about in an amusing way, according to the quote from Sandra Bullock:

“He and I have the same hairdresser and she told him to do my movie and she told me to do his movie. That is — honest to god — the truth. We went through a whole litany of people. He was like the eighth choice.”

– Sandra Bullock on casting for ‘The Lost City’

What comes next is what you can expect from a gold ole treasure hunt in the jungle: snake pits, explosions and a heroine in distress. Just like Netflix’s “Red Notice” although its not an Academy Award winner, it is a guilty pleasure, escapist piece of entertainment.

“The Lost City” will be released in theaters March 25.

‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’:  the Existential Sci-Fi Thriller a beyond Wild trip into Multiverses

The new sci-fi action film debuted at SXSW’s opening night. The title says its all “Everything Everywhere All At Once” deals with the chaotic adventure of an exhausted Chinese American woman, Evelyn who is struggling to finish her taxes. But that’s not all she’s dealing with: a marriage on the fritz, her strained relationship with her daughter, and oh yea, the universes (multi) that are collapsing on each other.

Actress and veteran action star Michelle Yeoh plays Evelyn. Yeoh is best known for her work in “Croching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” yet has been in over 40+ movies including “Shang Chi”, “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Guardians of the Galaxy”.

While at a tax appointment, something strange happens  (with her crazed tax auditor played by the iconic Jammie Lee Curtis), she finds herself experiencing alternate selves – versions of Evelyn that has bad-ass martial art skills, one that can speak English fluently, and strangest of all, one where she has hot dogs for fingers!

A full fledged multiverse that’s collapsing and only can be stopped with the help from all of her alt-world counterparts keeps the action and visual stimulation at peak levels with the story, though twisted, still present and accounted for.

The film will be released March 25 and stars Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Harry Shum Jr., Jenny Slate with James Hong and Jamie Lee Curtis. Produced by the Russo Brothers of Marvel’s Avengers fame, initial release is for theaters and no streaming platform has been announced at this date.

Brad Pitt’s next Action Thriller is coming: Revealed by the Deceitful new Teaser for ‘Bullet Train’

Screen Grab / Teaser Trailer / Sony Pictures

Book bodes well for Suspense and Action

The 30 second teaser trailer from Sony Pictures starring Brad Pitt has just been released. The video clip comes off as an advertisement for the Nippon Speed Line (NSL), a (fictional) new and fast mode of transportation, with beautiful scenery of Japan alongside soothing and tranquil music. Yet, it appears anything but as we are left with the last frame of battered face Brad Pitt (who plays a character name Lady Bug).

The tag line “Get on Board March 2” is presumably when we can expect the official trailer to be released. The action thriller is based on the international best selling book by Japanese author Kotaro Isaka.

The film follows a group of assassins that are traveling together on a bullet train, soon coming to realize that their individual missions are, in fact, connected. High Speeds, violence and chaos will naturally follow.

Brad Pitt isn’t the only big name within the cast, there are also Sandra Bullock, Joey King, Michael Shannon and Logan Lerman, to name a few. And that’s not mentioning director Leitch who’s onboard, best known best for his work in “John Wick”.

“Bullet Train” is currently scheduled for theatrical release July 15, 2022.

Matrix 4 Resurrections 2nd Official Trailer is out: Watch Now

Digital vs. Post-Apocalyptic, the Matrix Resurrections latest trailer continues with mystery and confusion

The new preview hints at repeating loops (deja vu) and even scenes from previous films from the trilogy.

The foundations of the Matrix movies always played with the question of what is reality, and that it can be both artificially created and manipulated.

In a world of two realities – everyday life and what lies behind it – Thomas Anderson will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more,” reads the movie’s official synopsis. “Choice, while an illusion, is still the only way in or out of the Matrix, which is stronger, more secure, and more dangerous than ever before.”

Fans gets to see Jada Pinkett Smith’s character Niobe with a drastic transformation.  In addition it appears that Jonathan Groff’s character is playing Agent Smith.

There’s a hint that something special is lurking beneath the entertaining endless action sequences

Both Neo, looking, just like Keanu a lifetime removed and yet the same, and Trinity appear to be aiding the cause by bringing a kind of effortless perfection to the cast – No need to mention John Wick or any intervening saga, this is a continuation, or more aptly, a resurrection of what was so amazing in the time, place spirit of that original film.

A thread like an unbroken through line, connecting the 1999 moment anew, yet absorbing the intervening changes to the fictional worlds of artifice within the films and to a third, that we, the audience, have grown with bringing us to December 22, 2021.

Naturally, some images produce more curiosity and questions than they answer, even when a still frame is isolated and studied. There is a particularly interesting interaction with the rooftop crowd in this case (above) and the image begs the question: will Neo lead uprisings both within the Matrix and the revolutions in the “real” world?

What kinds of mental challenges and trickery will a more mature Neo encounter while in the Matrix? This shot also produces mystery and begs for speculation regarding the script and how the various logical and illogical pathways will be traversed.

Multiple flash frames do confirm that a romantic adventure and escape will extend the story of Neo & Trinity, and that, while perfectly fitting, also appears to be something that could add more interest on a level above the intervening sequels (2 & 3). For all these reasons and many more, it does look like the buzz and building anticipation will start here and just keep growing until we all have a chance to experience the film in its entirety. On December 22, 2021 either in the Theater (best!) or on HBO Max for subscribers.

If anything, it feels like there is a depth and poignancy to the characters, the images and the implied story that extends and deepens the original, as a great sequel should do. For once it’s as if the maturity of the main stars in the cast is not an obstacle to manage or navigate but a built in feature.

As per W.B. press kit: The film also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (“Candyman,” the “Aquaman” franchise) Jessica Henwick (TV’s “Iron Fist,” “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens”), Jonathan Groff (“Hamilton,” TV’s “Mindhunter”), Neil Patrick Harris (“Gone Girl”), Priyanka Chopra Jonas (TV’s “Quantico,”), Christina Ricci (TV’s “Escaping the Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story,” “The Lizzie Borden Chronicles”), Telma Hopkins (TV’s “Dead to Me,”), Eréndira Ibarra (series “Sense8,” “Ingobernable”), Toby Onwumere (TV’s “Empire”), Max Riemelt (series “Sense8”), Brian J. Smith (series “Sense8,” “Treadstone”), and Jada Pinkett Smith (“Angel Has Fallen,” TV’s “Gotham”).

Lana Wachowski directed from a screenplay by Wachowski & David Mitchell & Aleksander Hemon, based on characters created by The Wachowskis. The film was produced by Grant Hill, James McTeigue and Lana Wachowski. The executive producers were Garrett Grant, Terry Needham, Michael Salven, Jesse Ehrman and Bruce Berman.

Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett prove a Dangerous Pair in Thriller ‘Nightmare Alley’

Despite the title of the upcoming film, “Nightmare Alley”, the new Bradly Cooper / Cate Blanchett starrer is not a horror movie or anything in the realm of the otherworldly or comic book are fantastical. Instead, it’s a very different type of movie, which perhaps less surprising once you take into account that it is the newest work from Guillermo del Toro who is best known for his supernatural films like “The Shape of Water” or the franchise “Hellboy”.

In this outing, it’s a somewhat obscure genre; a larger-than-life-update to a 40s noir classic with a unique aesthetic, perhaps more fitting for 2021.

Perhaps, given the star studded cast, it aims for academy cred, such as last years “Mank” without the obvious Orson Wells connex.

The official “Nightmare Alley” synopsis from Searchlight Pictures reads: “When charismatic but down-on-his-luck Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) endears himself to clairvoyant Zeena (Toni Collette) and her has-been mentalist husband Pete (David Strathairn) at a traveling carnival, he crafts a golden ticket to success, using this newly acquired knowledge to grift the wealthy elite of 1940s New York society.

With the virtuous Molly (Rooney Mara) loyally by his side, Stanton plots to con a dangerous tycoon (Richard Jenkins) with the aid of a mysterious psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who might be his most formidable opponent yet.”

The remake of the 1947 film noir classic, inspired by the 1946 novel of the same name. The official trailer gives viewers a sneak peak at the upcoming creepy psychological thriller that will premiere in theaters December 17.

Funny or Die: in ‘Don’t Look up’ – Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence tackle the End of the World

A race against time in order to save the world is ostensibly the schema of the latest Netflix film “Don’t Look Up”. DiCaprio plays as professor Dr. Randall Mindy and JLaw is an astronomy grad student. The pair stumble across a life-changing discovery… that a comet is on a collision course for Earth.

Based on first impressions film may be more of a accurate allegorical send up for our real life climate crisis. In the film, when the scientists raise the alarm to the U.S. government about the comet, the response, in typical bureaucratic insanity is to “sit tight and assess”, just as has been the case for over 30 years regarding global warming (joke delivered by the wildly funny Jonah Hill).

The über impressive cast has a handful of extremely talented actors including (in addition to the marquee stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence); Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Cate Blanchett, and Tyler Perry.

The movie was both written and directed by Adam McKay, the Oscar Award winner responsible for “The Big Short” and “Vice”.

Similar to those films, his patented multi-layered approach is in play, where comedy, absurd pathos and a “laugh about the tragic stupidity of the human race” reigns.

And, possibly, with this amazing cast, it will be the most successful iteration to date.

A huge departure, if you take the correlation to the looming climate extinction level events at face value, is how the film is focused on the future (a fictional one, but still looking forward) for a change.

While both “The Big Short” and “Vice” chronicled a historic event or personage, this time, it is the potentially devastating human inability to see past their own self absorbed pathetic existences that is lampooned.

And if we can all laugh at ourselves and somehow get the message underlying, what meanwhile appears as great comic entertainment, perhaps the outcome can be altered. Or at least we can appreciate the absurdity as we all go down in flames.

The comedy will be released in select theaters on December 10th and two weeks later be available for subscribers to stream free on Netflix, starting on December 24th

Sandra Bullock is ex-convict for ‘The Unforgivable’ in Dramatic Turn

You can see the new trailer starring Sandra Bullock in new role for “The Unforgivable” below. The film will be the first turn for the actress since 2018 when she played in the strange post-apocalyptic thriller “Bird Box” for Netflix, which was met with wild success. Bullock will both star and act as producer in this, her 2nd project with the streaming service.

Based on a viewing of the snippet from the trailer, this film looks to be on track as a top contender among the growing lineup of new fall and winter movies rolling out, which also include Benedict Cumberbatch in “The Power of the Dog” and Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in “Don’t Look Up”.

The official synopsis from Netflix:

“Released from prison after serving a sentence for a violent crime, Ruth Slater (Bullock) re-enters a society that refuses to forgive her past. Facing severe judgment from the place she once called home, her only hope for redemption is finding the estranged younger sister she was forced to leave behind.”

The upcoming drama is scheduled for release in select U.S. theaters on Nov. 24 and drops to stream on the Netflix on Dec. 10th.

Apple had no choice but to create Cinematic Mode: here’s the real reason why

Above: Photo / Apple

Bokeh into a corner; the coming of age for smartphone photography

Much has been said about the new camera system, and in particular, the top end iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max versions. Cinematic mode is one new feature that has generated a lot of interest, some admiration and some confusion.

Apple marketing has not helped to clarify – the emphasis with the name and all the marketing materials and ads are jumping into the claim that this is a high-end pro replacement for prime lenses and a human focus puller. And you should make professional movies with it.

This is a valid idea, to a point, and it’s a fantastic accomplishment to have a cinematic mode at all, especially in your pocket. And, perhaps, the limitation at HD video and no 4k capability will be overcome, either in software or with the iPhone 14.

But, in reality, none of that matters. In reality this mode was absolutely necessary, with or without the autofocus “robot-focus-puller” trick.

Including the telephoto camera made the cinematic effect absolutely mandatory

So taking a small step back for a moment, let’s look at the big changes in the iPhone 13 Pro cameras compared to the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro. The big change was the ultra-wide camera / lens combo along with the 3X 77mm telephoto camera / lens. In total making 6x optical zoom range possible.

It’s the 77mm that is the huge move. Why? Well, if you are a photographer and have ever worked with a prime or zoom lens of 77mm or above you will be aware of a couple of things. The size, length and weight of the lens is massive. And to duplicate that in a tiny camera module as part of a three camera array on an iPhone presents a pretty big challenge.

Obviously the size limitation makes it impossible for a “real” 77mm lens to be strapped to the back of an iPhone. And, even if the magnification was possible, what about the “look” and the quality of the image?

And what constitutes, in photographic tradition, the beauty and style that makes a long lens like a 77mm artistically desirable? Because just having the ability to get a closer view or shot of an subject without moving the camera closer is a small and relatively insignificant part of the challenge.

https://www.apple.com/newsroom/videos/iphone-13-pro-cinematic-mode/large_2x.mp4

Bokeh because it’s beautiful and highlights the subject (often a human or animal) in the video or photo.

Now, to be clear, we are really talking about video recording, not just photos. Because the portrait mode on iPhone has been around, and improving, for years, and cinematic mode is creating similar effect and adding a new level for video.

Adding a 77mm lens, however, if it was not getting the bokeh effect in the video recording, would have been a disappointment of monumental proportions for photographers and would not have been an option.

And, good news folks, the bokeh in cinematic mode when using the 77mm lens is very usable and takes the cinematic style potential into a creative realm that is “Pro”, with or without the focus pulling tricks, and / or the panning or dolly shots with a moving camera.

Both the addition of “portrait mode” backgrounds for FaceTime video, which is a look that has become standard for YouTube videographers, and, more impressively and more importantly, the ability to shift through the lens “kit” as a feature film director would, using different focal lengths (like swapping out prime lenses on a feature film shoot) is a game changer.

However, none of this would be even remotely possible if the switch from a virtual 26mm wide angle prime lens to a virtual 77mm prime did not have some emulation of the unique qualities such as depth or field and, above all, bokeh that shifted as well.

And, thankfully this works the way a director or DP would want – not the same, of course, as a rig that has lenses that cost as much as a dozen iPhone 13 Pro Maxes, but one that is unique and able to produce beautiful, soulful and human effects that are a computationally assisted approximation. That look, or at least something with a similar feel, is akin to what has inspired generations of filmmakers to love what a 77mm or 85mm or even a 100mm (my personal favorite) does for a human subject in the wild.

It is now possible to produce images that have the convenience of an iPhone and the creative mix of styles that could previously only be found in a full professional kit with multiple prime lenses, and that is something that will change and impact the quality and style of everything we watch, particularly in production areas where million dollar kits are not an option.
