The Pristine Future: Why Science Fiction Abandons Oil and Fossil Fuels

The future is clean because all the oil is gone

In the realm of science fiction, visions of the future often gleam with pristine, utopian landscapes and gleaming cities.

One striking commonality among these futuristic portrayals is the conspicuous absence of oil and fossil fuels, the once-dominant energy sources of our present.

But why do sci-fi creators consistently envision a world where such primitive methods have been left behind? The answer lies in the belief that advanced technology and futuristic civilizations would never rely on such archaic energy sources.

The Dawn of Futuristic Energy

In the world of science fiction, the distant future is synonymous with breathtaking technological advancements.

Spacecraft traverse galaxies with ease, cities float in the sky, and robots perform intricate tasks effortlessly. In these fantastical worlds, oil and fossil fuels appear as relics of the past, resigned to the history books of an era long gone.

The driving force behind this visionary shift lies in the very essence of futuristic technology.

Science fiction writers and filmmakers envision advanced civilizations with highly sophisticated energy solutions that surpass the limitations of oil and fossil fuels. The idea is that such primitive methods, while once integral to our world, would be rendered obsolete by superior alternatives.

The Limitations of Oil and Fossil Fuels

Science fiction creators recognize the inherent shortcomings of oil and fossil fuels as energy sources. These resources are finite and subject to depletion, leading to resource wars and geopolitical tensions in our present reality.

They emit greenhouse gases, contributing to climate change and environmental degradation. In contrast, the future they imagine necessitates cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions to ensure the survival and prosperity of advanced civilizations.

Furthermore, the imaginative worlds of science fiction are driven by concepts like interstellar travel and space exploration. These endeavors demand extraordinary amounts of energy, making the reliance on oil and fossil fuels simply impractical.

For the creators of sci-fi, such primitive methods would be incapable of powering the fantastic technological marvels required to explore the cosmos.

The Paradigm Shift: Futuristic Energy Solutions

Science fiction offers a glimpse into the potential of renewable and advanced energy sources.

In these visionary worlds, technologies like antimatter reactors, fusion power, zero-point energy, or even harnessing energy from celestial bodies are imagined as the primary means of powering civilizations.

These theoretical energy sources, while still speculative in our present time, are perceived as the logical progression beyond our current reliance on oil and fossil fuels.

Moreover, as the genre explores themes of progress and evolution, it assumes that futuristic civilizations would have unlocked the secrets of limitless, sustainable energy.

By embracing these advanced energy solutions, the sci-fi future avoids the pitfalls of pollution, environmental degradation, and resource scarcity.

Reflections and Aspirations

Beyond technological feasibility, the futuristic portrayal of clean energy also reflects our collective aspirations for a better world.

Science fiction often serves as a mirror to society, reflecting our hopes and dreams for the future. By depicting advanced civilizations free from the shackles of fossil fuels, sci-fi inspires a collective longing for a more sustainable and harmonious existence.

In essence, science fiction presents a vision of a world where human ingenuity has transcended the limitations of our present reality.

The rejection of oil and fossil fuels in these fictional realms becomes a symbolic representation of our yearning for a cleaner, brighter future—one where technology coexists with nature in harmony.

An urgent meaning for today

While science fiction may currently be a realm of imagination, its vision of a future free from oil and fossil fuels serves as an inspiration and a call to action for our own world.

As we grapple with the challenges of climate change and the urgency to transition to renewable energy, these futuristic dreams remind us that there is a path beyond our dependence on finite resources.

The shift to cleaner energy solutions is not a distant fantasy; it is an attainable reality that requires dedication, innovation, and global cooperation.

By drawing on the visions of science fiction, we can fuel our determination to build a sustainable future—one where the landscapes are pristine, and the energy that powers our world aligns with the marvels of the imagination.

Only then can we take confident steps toward turning the clean energy dreams of science fiction into the breathtaking reality of our own future.

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’: Trailer divides critics but did they see 3-D version?

The first trailer, a teaser really, of the second iteration of Avatar is finally here, unless you went to the theater to see “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” where the trailer was first released.

Returning cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Giovanni Ribisi are present for Avatar 2.  There is also said to be a variety of new characters, a couple of which will be played by Kate Winslet and Michelle Yeoh.

There are some that are none too thrilled with the lack luster teaser…. Maybe because it didn’t really feel all that much like a “trailer”, or it could be, the original Avatar was a movie in which you went to the theater, put on special 3D glasses and was an experience. Watching the 2D video clip online didn’t pack the punch or awe-factor that many have been waiting for.

It’s a common theme with James Cameron movies – the plot and concept are so “perfect” but nearly generic is that perfection. Then all the effort and $$$$ is lavished on special effects and execution of that archetypal concept.

Will this, admittedly ultra-successful recipe work in 2022? Hard to say – this will be a big, huge, ultra-promoted blockbuster release no matter what. Little chance of besting Avatar ‘1’ but could be less than a disappointment even if it does not hit the $1 billion mark.

Check out the trailer below, the nearly 2 minute video clip, in glorious streaming 2D, doesn’t present audience with much in the way of a plot line besides showing the Na’vi in Pandora and having to defend their territory against invaders.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” is currently scheduled for a theatrical release at the end of the year on December 16:

Sci-Fi Author Neal Stephenson tackles Global Warming Solutions in ‘Termination Shock’

There’s a Neal Stephenson Renaissance Going on Due to one Single Word

Metaverse. In case you’ve not heard of it, metaverse is the term that was coined by Stephenson in his dystopian novel “Snow Crash” to denote a virtual artificial world of corporate exploitation. In all its ironic glory the name, or a shortened version thereof, “Meta” was appropriated as a re-branding vehicle for that empire of corporate greed and exploitation… Facebook.

So then, what better backdrop for the new novel to launch, and with a potentially even more timely theme, could there be other than, namely, the looming destruction our planet faces due to climate change and excessive carbon emissions. Moreover, the lack of human cooperation needed to overcome greed and stupidity in order to resume ourselves.

If this particular perspective on a fictional, but perhaps, soon, all too real, set of circumstances, is not spot on, there is nevertheless a great need for these questions to be addressed.

After all it is ultimately the cooperation and consensus of the entire planet that will be necessary to find, and more importantly, implement a solution that will prevent armageddon.

Perhaps the newly intensified focus on the future – fantasies, but also concerns and disaster aversion planning, is just what is needed. Perhaps authors, artists, engineers and even an average citizen can begin today and find the thread of change in thinking, and ultimately, living that’s needed for all our survival.

From Bookshop.org:

One man – visionary billionaire restaurant chain magnate T. R. Schmidt, Ph.D. – has a Big Idea for reversing global warming, a master plan perhaps best described as “elemental.” But will it work? And just as important, what are the consequences for the planet and all of humanity should it be applied?

Ranging from the Texas heartland to the Dutch royal palace in the Hague, from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the sunbaked Chihuahuan Desert, Termination Shock brings together a disparate group of characters from different cultures and continents who grapple with the real-life repercussions of global warming. Ultimately, it asks the question: Might the cure be worse than the disease?

Epic in scope while heartbreakingly human in perspective, Termination Shock sounds a clarion alarm, ponders potential solutions and dire risks, and wraps it all together in an exhilarating, witty, mind-expanding speculative adventure.

Apple TV+ Kicks off ‘Foundation’ series early: tonight at 6PM Pacific

Enter the Galactic Empire – Foundation:

Apple’s tweet, presumably, to avoid a collision course with the iPhone 13 arrival day (big!) says it all. A sudden, last minute escalation of the time frame for this highly anticipated new series:

From @Foundation_’s epic debut to @TedLasso’s Emmy-winning antics, watch the latest episodes from Apple TV+ three hours earlier this week. Streaming begins Thursday at 9pm EST/6pm PST.

Apple TV tweet

Perhaps a planned sudden breaking news update to the years long scheduling for this big sci-fi event? Hard to say – maybe the iPhone 13 arriving in stores and for some folks arriving by UPS is more of a distraction than expected, in the eyes of the Apple TV+ big-wigs?

Of course, that’d be a good thing since it would mean that the futuristic phone has just too much juice for the venerated classic book series come-to-life as a streaming series on Apple TV+. Hooray for both, I suppose. If you are starting to become enamored with Apple TV+ shows after having fun with Ted Lasso or other recent hits (really a hit, seems so according to the Emmys ) that are perhaps the early beginnings of a trend…

And last, but definitely not least, is the long-awaited sci-fi adaptation of the timeless classic “Foundation” by Isaac Asimov.

Apple TV+ rocks it Dystopian Style w/ Tom Hanks in ‘Finch’, ‘Invasion’ and ‘Foundation’

A string of upcoming dystopian sci-fi will be hitting the streaming platform

What does a post-apocalyptic earth, a robot, a dog and Tom Hanks all have in common? That would be the new Apple TV+ film called “Finch”. This project marks Hank’s 2nd Apple TV+ outing, his first appearance on the streaming platform was “Greyhound” which was met with mucho critical acclaim.

This time around, this family friendly film futuristic cashing into the feel of a mash-up between ‘Wall-E’ and ‘The Martian’ and based on the trailer looks to be an oddball thing: bleak futuristic fun for all ages.

A massive solar flare nearly destroys Earth, Hank, who plays a robotics engineer named Finch and has only survived because he has been living in an underground bunker for the past decade. During his time in a post-apocalyptic Earth he befriends a stray dog which he names Goodyear (shades of Wilson?. Hanks decides to utilize his expertise by building a robot to help take care of Goodyear when he is gone.

“Finch” premieres on Apple TV+ this November 5.

‘Made for Love’ HBO Max Sci-Fi hit series for April

Love in an Arid Wasteland of the Absurd

Made for Love, is a new half-hour dramedy series streaming now on HBO Max. The first three episodes were released on April fools day, (not sure if this is significant) and there are seven more episodes that will come out in a subsequent 2 bundles all available as of April 15th.

Although there may be a familiar vibe for those who enjoyed “Palm Springs”, the Hulu production, there are also some meaningful differences. “Made for Love” is mining the rich ground where love and disaster intersect. The united front in the face of chaos is no longer central to the themes.

The twin or triumvirate of themes, all dark yet at times ridiculously amusing are woven well. Those that have an appetite for the dystopia of tech and romance will be right at home and feel an affinity for the tone.

From HBO: Made for Love is a darkly absurd and cynically poignant story of love and divorce. It follows Hazel Green (Cristin Milioti), a thirty-something woman on the run after 10 years in a suffocating marriage to Byron Gogol (Billy Magnussen), a controlling tech billionaire.

Synopsis: “A woman is on the run after 10 years in a suffocating marriage to a tech billionaire, who has implanted a monitoring device in her brain, allowing him to track her, watch her and know her “emotional data” as she tries to regain her independence.”

Aliens and “Galactic Federation” reported on by Major News Outlets as if ‘Real’

Above: Photo Collage / Lynxotic

NBC News,  Forbes and others all picked up a story relating to Alien confirmation by head of Israel’s security space program

Professor Haim Eshed served from 1981 to 2010 as the head of Israel’s security space program, as well as having rank as a former Israeli Defense force general.  Eshed, an 87 year old with vast experience within the space program and reputable publications in academia broke news at an extraterrestrial level.

According to the professor’s claims, aliens are real, they have made contact with some humans and are in fact working alongside various governments, and lastly, they (meaning the aliens) will not reveal themselves to the general public until they have decided that we (humans) are ready.  All this, based on an interview with The Jerusalem Post, along with another recent interview for the Tel Aviv newspaper Yediot Aharonot.

NBC, among more than a dozen news outlets that picked up the story, stuck to the facts, which is to say; the fact that these statements were made and what the detail was in the various claims. Only at the end of the article titled: Former Israeli space security chief says extraterrestrials exist, and Trump knows about it was any sort of pushback or questioning of the statements mentioned.

The equivocating comments were from Nick Pope, who, according to NBC, used to investigate UFOs for the British Ministry of Defense, described Eshed’s remarks as “extraordinary.” They also quoted him as saying “Either this is some sort of practical joke or publicity stunt to help sell his book, perhaps with something having been lost in translation, or someone in the know is breaking ranks,”

The implication is, either NBC and others are in tune with the idea that all of this (including Trump being in talks with aliens) is at least possible, if not likely, or they are writing entire articles, as if they are “The Onion“; from a perspective of total suspension of disbelief. Like a news story that is actually making fun of itself. Third option is aliens are definitely real, in contact with human governments and we need to just get used to it.

“There’s an agreement between the U.S. government and the aliens. They signed a contract with us to do experiments here. They, too, are researching and trying to understand the whole fabric of the universe, and they want us as helpers.”

Professor Haim Eshed, former head of Israel’s security space program

As if this year couldn’t get even stranger, in the last month of 2020, here comes bizarre news of the existence of aliens.  What is even harder to believe is big news outlets are covering this story not to debunk or fact check, instead, seeming to acknowledge there could very well be intelligent lifeforms beyond humans and Earth. Which, of course, there could be.

This comes after other news regarding mysterious monoliths appearing in strange locations, including: Utah, California, UK and even Romania, which begun the spark of the conspiracy they were planted by aliens. Apparently in that case human “art lovers” are more likely the source.

There has been a long history of people claiming they witnessed Unidentified flying objects (UFOs). Yet a UFO doesn’t necessarily mean aliens, just that they cannot be identified, with some sitings attributed to phenomena like astroids and meteors, etc. Yet it is not out of the realm of scientific plausibility that aliens can exist, thus the ongoing coverage.

What sounds even more far-fetched than an alien- human alliance is that Eshed alleged that Trump was made aware of the aliens. According to Eshed, Trump was going to disclose their existence but the “Galactic Federation” told him to wait until humanity is further evolved and is more ready to absorb the information.  If you wren’t aware, the Galactic Federation is the alien formed organization with an underground base built on Mars.

Based on Trump’s inability to censor or filter any of his thoughts, let alone something as huge as ALIENS, it is hard to believe he won’t be tempted to tweet out the revelation.

“The UFOs have asked not to publish that they are here, humanity is not ready yet. Trump was on the verge of revealing, but the aliens in the Galactic Federation are saying: ‘Wait, let people calm down first.’ They don’t want to start mass hysteria. They want to first make us sane and understanding.”

PROFESSOR HAIM ESHED, FORMER HEAD OF ISRAEL’S SECURITY SPACE PROGRAM

Naturally, the retired professor and former general isn’t the first high profile individual to make claims about aliens.  Canada’s former defense minister, Paul Hellyer made public back in 2013 he believes E.T.s are present on earth and have seen a UFO. Even Edgar Mitchell, the Apollo 14 astronaut and sixth man to walk on the moon  spoke out about Roswell and aliens in 2015. Many astronomers are confident there is life beyond Earth, but the actual proof or search for intelligent life, continues to be unsuccessful so far.

So the big questions still posed, “are we alone?” and “where are they?”

If WW84 does boffo @ holiday / Christmas, using this novel approach, Chaos Walking could be a follow-up trend-extender, so stay tuned for release details closer to the official date.

The film is inspired by the 2008 book “The Knife of Never Letting Go” by Patrick Ness, the first of his Chaos Walking series.  Set in the future, Daisy Ridley plays character Viola, who crash lands on another planet, a planet in which all the women have disappeared.  All the men have been infected with “the Noise” germ, that put their thoughts on display.  Viola teams up with Tom Hollands character, Todd Hewitt and vows to protect her, all the while learning to channel “his own inner power and unlock the planet’s dark secrets,” per Lionsgate’s description.

Chaos Walking began filming back in the beautiful, pre-pandemic days of 2017, for the originally planned March 2019 release.  Because the two stars were also juggling other movies, Tom Holland filming Spider-Man and Daisy Ridley busy filming Star Wars, it was difficult to get the leads to finalize all production until 2020.

Along with Ridley and Holland, Chaos Walking boasts a stacked cast that also includes Nick Jonas, Mads Mikkelsen, Cynthia Erivo, David Oyelowo, Kurt Sutter, and Demián Bichir.
