Should Google Block all ChatGPT Generated Content?

Most agree that it’s possible to identify AI generated content: what about partial and hybrid?

There’s a gold rush of sorts in the peripheral app market with an explosion of tools coming out with various ChatGPT related services. On the one side there are AI detectors, meant to identify “non-human” text, at the other end of the spectrum are rephrasing tools to help “cheaters” in schools, or perhaps just blog writers to disguise AI origins with minimal (human) work.

There is, by many, the assumption that Google is or will block or penalize any AI generated content in search results. At the same time companies like CNET, and recently announced Buzzfeed, plus undoubtedly many others, are already publishing or developing content written wholly or partially by AI.

Of course, many publishers have been using computer generated content for years in areas like the stock market and weather updates, where human text would be too expensive to use when the volume of ever changing data points is so high.

It is also questionable if the various apps even function as advertised. For example if a rephrasing app can fool a public AI detector can it also fool Google’s proprietary software?

The bigger issue is: why?

Derivative content and low quality information has been a staple of the online experience since the first bulletin board chat rooms of yore. Even if possible, is it necessary or clearly desirable to filter out all content that has an AI component from Google search results, for example?

Could this also be seen as an anticompetitive move to try to reduce the value of the software of a competitor? And what percentage of AI “infection” should be considered taboo? 90%? How about 47%? And if those percentages are calculated using tools that themselves have an error rate of 10% or more, what is really happening?

Will humans be rewarded by Google for not using AI to assist, at least not directly in content creation or publishing? If not, then how are those humans laboring at a disadvantage going to be able to compete with those that do take the assistance?

ChatGPT and other AI tools are already in circulation and growing

The output of ChatGPT is usually somewhat bland, and depending on the subject matter, often gleaned from obvious sources – it is designed to avoid misinformation by avoiding unusual “untrusted” sources.

This creates text that reads as “safe”, and while generally highly readable and grammatically accurate, is not particularly creative, at least not by human standards. My human prediction is that, with the horse already out of the barn, so to speak, there is no way for any sensible filter to be used that would eliminate AI generated text or AI influenced content from existing side by side with “pure” human generated content.

As Google was quoted to have indicated in tweets, basically, content is content and if it is well written and helpful for humans to read and use in human life, then it is just as good for consumption, with or without AI assistance. They point out that mainly content that is manufactured specifically to trick search engines is what they absolutely hope to filter, not all AI assisted content, even if that were possible. Simple right?

No chatbots were harmed in the making of this content

All that’s left then is the question of best uses for AI in the writing and content publishing process. Best, not in the sense of having AI “fingerprints” or not, but rather in the quality and usefulness of the final product. Same as it ever was. Right?

Apple Reveals new MacBook Pro Models, Mac Mini: all with M2 and M2 Pro Chips

Unusual January announcement with big product reveal

Apple dropped a lot of upgrade news today. Though still early in the year, it’s already preparing for the next generation of machines powered by Apple Silicon. With two models each, one using the M2 chip, and another Pro model with the M2 Pro inside, there are 2 new levels of power and performance, with a variety of options and configurations.

The MacBook Pro models come in 14′ and 16′ screen configurations and, as one would surmise, there’s more speed, memory capacity, and a ton of other upgraded features. With all the power, speed and invisible upgrades, constantly coming via software, machine learning and AI, one can only wonder if there are simply too many options, and choices in the ever expanding line up.

Also, coming after the dramatic price drop at Tesla, would this be considered a similar move to boost lagging sales? If you are in a position to afford a new Mac, and you need the power for media related activities, you are in luck as this is a big, meaty refresh, particularly if you opt for the Pro level of performance.


The Mac mini is priced at $599 with an M2 chip, which is 100$ less than the prior version, or at $1,299 with the M2 Pro. The new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 starts at $1,999. The 16-inch MacBook Pro model will cost at least $2,499. All of the newly configured models will be available beginning Jan. 24, but you can order the computers beginning Tuesday.

Microgrids and Distributed Solar Energy can Change our Future

Forces are aligning to accelerate the inevitable: a decentralized solution for power production and distribution

Today it is not easy to imagine a world where the centralized electrical grid has become unnecessary and its use is discontinued. In such a world, distributed energy systems, such as localized microgrid power plants, will have become the primary means of generating and distributing electricity.

In this world, communities and businesses would generate their own electricity using a combination of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, and local energy storage systems. These microgrids would be connected to one another, forming a decentralized network of energy production and distribution.

As a result of this shift, the need for large centralized power plants and transmission lines would eventually be eliminated. Instead, energy would be generated closer to the point of consumption, reducing the enormous transmission losses and costs inherent in the current centralized systems. Additionally, because microgrids can operate independently, they would be less vulnerable to disruptions caused by natural disasters or cyber attacks, leading to increased energy security and reliability.

There are massive forces already marshaling to protect the legacy systems

The potential for distributed power plants, virtual power storage systems, and sustainable production and consumption in close proximity to one another is unlimited.

However the existing systems, still based primarily on fossil fuel powered, centralized power plants and a huge grid network (3 in the US, to be precise) for distribution, with all the attendant problems, are already being targeted for massive expansion and renovation.

The US centralized power grid system, as we know it, is facing several major challenges as the demand for electricity continues to rise. One of the most significant problems is the aging infrastructure. Many of the transmission lines, substations and power plants that make up the grid were built decades ago and are in need of upgrading or replacement.

The likely time and cost to upgrade and repair the systems is extreme, measured in years and even decades and billions if not trillions of dollars.

This not only poses a risk to the reliability of the system but also leads to increased maintenance costs. Furthermore, as the population continues to grow and urbanize, the demand for electricity is increasing and the centralized grid is struggling to keep up with the rising demand.

    This leads to significant energy savings, as buildings require 90% less heating and cooling, and therefore far less energy is consumed.     Ultra-high performance buildings, also known as net-zero energy buildings, take hyper-efficient design to the next level by incorporating renewable energy technologies such as solar panels, wind turbines, and geothermal systems. They are designed to generate as much, or more, energy than they consume, and when combined with energy storage systems, ultra-high performance buildings can be completely self-sufficient and produce more energy than they consume.

    When combined, these design methods can create buildings that are not only highly energy efficient but also comfortable, healthy, and resilient. These buildings are designed to maintain a consistent indoor temperature and humidity levels, providing a high level of indoor air quality, while also being able to withstand extreme weather conditions.

    In addition, setting a 90% more energy efficient standard would also greatly reduce the carbon footprint of the building sector, which is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. By reducing the energy consumption of buildings, by the maximum amount that established methods are capable of, we can accelerate the reduction of our dependence on fossil fuels, and far more effectively mitigate the effects of climate change.

    Changing direction to improve the odds of success, not just survival

    As the shift begins to take hold, and a distributed, hyper-efficient system begins to be the dominant direction, many benefits could arise. Gone would be the days of blackouts and brownouts caused by failures in the centralized grid. Microgrids are designed to operate independently, meaning that if there is a disruption in one area, the rest of the system can continue to function normally. This increased resilience also makes micro-grids more resistant to natural disasters and cyber attacks.

    With the decentralization of energy production, the cost of energy would decrease significantly. Consumers would no longer be at the mercy of large utility companies, and competition among small, community-based energy providers would drive prices down. Additionally, the excess energy generated by microgrids, and unneeded due to 90% greater efficiency in building designs, could be sold back to the grid, providing a significant source of income for the community.

    In this world, income inequality is reduced as access to electricity and economic opportunities is improved for marginalized communities. Remote or rural areas that were previously off the grid now have access to reliable and affordable energy, which improves living standards and reduces poverty.

    Furthermore, the shift towards microgrids can lead to a boost in local economic development and job creation. The ownership and operation of micro-grid power plants are often in the hands of individuals, small businesses and communities, leading to a stronger local economy.

    The goal of reaching a future state, a world where the centralized electrical grid is no longer necessary, and its use has been discontinued, is a world where energy is generated and distributed by a network of small, decentralized power plants and storage systems. This world is characterized by increased resilience, reduced costs, improved access to electricity, reduced income inequality, local economic development, and job creation and a cleaner environment. It’s a future worth striving for.

    Drought Conditions Improving after Atmospheric Rivers Drench California

    A look at the progress so far as another storm looms

    California has been some form of drought condition for most of the time since 2008. By September 2022 there were severe drought conditions in nearly all of the state. This was exacerbated by the driest first three months of any year at the beginning of 2022. Although December 2021 had precipitation and the snow pack was improved somewhat, it was not enough and this led to the extreme drought conditions by fall 2022.

    Atmospheric Rivers are a dangerous threat, but also bring large amounts of moisture

    Another storm front of this type is expected for the weekend, and, while most of us have had more than enough of the floods and generally wet nasty conditions, the chances for improving the historic drought extremes have increased and we can continue to benefit.

    The atmospheric rivers that we’ve seen in near continuous succession have brought a significant amount of rain, snow and moisture, making this one of the wettest winters in the record books.

    It has, unfortunately, also been a destructive and deadly series of storms and there is still a danger that that aspect of the phenomenon will continue as well.

    The US Drought Monitor has data on the situation continuously compiled, and as can be seen in the maps above there has been some meaningful improvement in the severity of the drought conditions. In particular, the worst areas have been brought back from the most extreme designation toward a somewhat more moderate state.

    Much of the water that flows throughout California has melting snow, mostly from the Sierra Nevada Mountains, as its source. In the best case, abundant snow fall during the winter, which creates a kind of natural reservoir, is released during the warmer weather in spring and early summer.

    With a large storm this weekend, and perhaps at least one more wet episode before the seasons change, the snow pack could reach “above normal” levels, which would be a big help to the still dry condition in the state. It is even possible that the storms could help fuel a spectacular super bloom, like we had in 2019

    Silver Lining Scenario: a Huge Superbloom Could be Coming

    Seemingly endless atmospheric river systems reduce drought conditions and could have other benefits

    The West Coast is not a fan of extreme rain events, such as the recent atmospheric river conditions, that are so rare in the region. Floods, snarl ups on the freeways, potential landslides, and conditions that can lead to wildfires later in the year, are all unwelcome repercussions.

    Fortunately, along with the mainly negative fallout, there’s also a silver lining of sorts, lurking beneath.

    Although the extreme drought conditions have only been partially mitigated, less extreme conditions are far better to have than ever worsening ones.

    A silver lining without an obvious caveat is the potential for a Superbloom, that could happen again this Spring, mainly in the desert areas of Southern California.



    A Superbloom is a term used to describe a rare and beautiful occurrence in which various wildflowers bloom simultaneously in one location. These occurrences are frequently brought on by a number of elements, such as a lot of rain, warm weather, and the presence of specific plant species.

    Awe-inspiring superblooms blanket hillsides and fields in a dazzling variety of hues and patterns. They contribute significantly to the ecosystem by giving a range of animals and insects food and a place to live.

    Scientifically, superblooms provide an opportunity for researchers to study the factors that contribute to their formation and the effects they have on the ecosystem.

    For example, the recent superbloom in California in 2019 was triggered by a combination of heavy rainfall and mild temperatures, leading to a proliferation of wildflowers in the state’s grasslands and chaparral regions.

    Hey ChatGPT, Be my Oracle, my Mirror, my Research Intern (!?)

    Many are twisting themselves into a pretzel trying to define ChatGPT, the reality is interesting, but less dramatic

    By now you probably know about the AI chatbot that hit the scene with a dramatic upgrade on December 15th 2022. Many articles dissect the performance looking for flaws or wonders.

    While both are relatively easy to find, the bottom line, for someone primarily working with text and language (there are other articles on coding, and graphic uses that I won’t get into here) is that it is a powerful, useful tool that needs a lot of human management (yay for humans).

    There are obvious stated limitations, some of which might well have been added intentionally. The main limitation is that the data and learning has a hard cutoff date of 2021. That means, for example, that statistics for the year 2021 that are routinely compiled, once the year is over, are 100% not available. In some cases even 2020 is a stretch.

    This also means, obviously, that anything related to current events or the what the media industry calls “news” is completely off limits.

    The other oft cited and obvious limitation is that the darn thing is not god, in other words it is known to be wrong at times. In some cases very wrong.

    The Pythian priestess or even the Oracle of Delphi it’s not, but wait a minute…

    Many would digest the limitations listed above (which are certainly not the only ones) and think “fuggeddiboutit”: not ready for prime time.

    But if you take a step back and think – it’s actually much more useful to have a tool that does what you want – but only if you ask the right question for the right reasons.

    Think of it like a very energetic intern or research assistant that has already done the research and can spit out responses instantly (as fast as it can “type). And. If you ask a question that is too vague or general, you will get a boring, generic, bland pile of junk text.

    On the other hand, if you go through logical steps that take into account the limitations listed above – for example – only ask about something that you know a lot about so that you will notice if there are errors, ask about something that is “evergreen” and not dependent on anything that’s happened since around 2021, and try to be extremely specific, and break things down into steps – you can get some interesting results that can be very useful.

        Solutions are Available to Save the Planet: How do we get the Public to Demand them?

        And, he goes on, in the process this would reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water use by significant amounts. The detail is well presented and, if true, does add up to a world changing, planet saving formula, or at least a major step toward rescue.

        The problem? In a nutshell this idea, even if rock solid in the data, would require the entire world to not only change the production methods for food (protein) but we would have to banish centuries of eating customs and traditions.

        Ultimately if we are to be saved by this solution, it would only happen when no other food is available. Not a pleasant thought.

        Reading between the lines the piece underscores a real and important issue, that finding a planet saving solution for global warming is one thing, finding a way to achieve mass adoption is another.

        The Tesla Example

        EVs are the most obvious example of a technology, around since before the fossil fuel industry became dominant, that has finally reached a tipping point of eventual total adoption vs. internal combustion engine cars.

        The transition, though perhaps inevitable, happend sooner, most would agree, because of Tesla and Elon Musk. And the difference was in the transformation of the concept and image from one of giving up pleasure for the good of the planet to “Have fun going 0 to 60 in 3.1 seconds while you save the planet”.

        This formula, don’t sell the problem, sell the beauty, power and pleasure of the solution, is probably going to be the most important factor in deciding if the planet, and humanity, will survive.

        Why make such a drastic claim? Because there are more solutions that are ready to be scaled up in a massive push worldwide, without any unproven or yet to be invented technology involved, if only the demand can be boosted with desire and excitement, not fear.

        While precision fermentation might be too difficult to market at scale, there are other sectors ripe for positive disruption and change, that could save us all.

        Unfortunately, not everything is as endorphin inducing as pounding the pedal to the metal in a Model S Plaid edition. Some things, like superior design, are only exciting when the results are felt over time.

        The important thing is to make sure that attention is paid, not just to the climate benefits, but to the superior aesthetics and owner experience made possible by the new thing.
