iPhone 11, AirPods Pro, All Software and Services not seeing weak sales after all? It’s the ecosystem, (stupid)

iPods Pro clip – produced by apple

Same song and dance? First all the negative predictions and then….

In the 80s and 90s there was an almost unanimous consensus that Apple was inferior to Microsoft and that Bill Gates was a genius for choosing to forgo building hardware and creating an empire on selling operating system software and a suite of office applications.

The choice and steadfast refusal by Steve Jobs to change the basic idea that Apple would build and back all aspects of the product and experience has, practically to this day, been seen as, at best, short sighted.

Ironically, the current wave of products for 2019: iPhone 11 Pro and Max, the Mac Pro with Pro Display XDR, the new MacBook Pros and Air and new iPads, AirPods Pro (still more to come) are all getting “better than expected” reviews and sales (at least the products that are available to date).

Although this is not an usual pattern. Like a blockbuster movie (Lion King?), as often as the negative reviews come flooding in, so the performance of the actual product shines in virtually inverse proportion to the dire predictions of the pundits and “experts”.

But this year, for Apple, it goes beyond that knee-jerk pattern. This year the chickens have truly come home to roost.

At this very moment millions are upgrading to iOS 13+ (don’t worry, the bugs will be ironed out soon enough) and next we will see iPad OS and Mac OS Catalina.

Just because these are all “free” upgrades, don’t be fooled by the price. The beauty of a complete ecosystem is that the benefits of one entity within the system (such as system software) accrue in great measure to all others.

And this year the interdependent innovations are nothing short of spectacular. Just take any individual device, service or function and the accelerated improvement virtually explodes in your face.

MacBook Pro 16 inch

Buy another iPhone? Is that really necessary? Only for a better camera?

The iPhone 11 Pro? “Just” has a great camera? Really? Well yes, it’s 3 cameras, 3 lenses and looks like a TV news camera from the 60s. But it is the combination of the evolution of the processing software, the “deep fusion”, machine learning within the photos app, also interwoven through iCloud and proprietary internal components, that make features like that unbelievable night mode possible, and make it possible to shoot 60fps 4K videos with all three cameras simultaneously (wait, say that again?) and all of this is just the tip of an iceberg that can only be rendered if you happen to be the company that also designs and builds its own chips (A13 Bionic with neural engine).

But wait, that is just the headline, under the hood, all of these improvements and upgrades are echoed and mirrored in every apple produced stand-alone software application, every third party developer product quick enough to ride the waves that the new system and processor makes possible, every app, every add-on all the interconnected functionality, on and on and on.

The buyers sense value – not just window dressing and hyped up bells and whistles but a complete ecosystem that was always better but now threatens to evolve at a pace that will be as mind-blowing as the original iPhone was just 12 years ago.

Because it’s the sum of the entire system – a “feature” that can not be marketed or even listed on a stat sheet – that is the most powerful force that will draw in users and surprise the nay-sayers again and again.

[gdgallery_gallery id_gallery=”3″]

All across the device galaxy the upgrades are more than incremental, they are transcendental

Take the iPad – particularly the iPad Pro, Not only will it take a quantum leap forward with added iPad OS features that push it into laptop-like functionality, but all the lame comparisons with the Surface are completely meaningless once you factor in the “Sidecar” function within Mac OS Catalina, not to mention the constantly evolving interconnected software (example: Photoshop and Affinity Photo both now on iPad). Sidecar allows the iPad to be used as an external, extra screen, or, if you have a recent Mac, for example a MacBook Pro or an iMac or a Mac Mini, and you are within 10 meters of it, you can use a mouse or Apple Pencil and you, literally, have a tiny mac in the form of an iPad Laptop.

So, in essence, you have a mostly iPad touch system device with all the special uses that implies, and yet, with iPad OS you also have the option to use it as a touch screen Laptop or, using Sidecar, you can switch to an actual Mac with all the associated functions and capabilities. And, yes, did I mention that if you already have an iPad and a Mac this has a cost of $0 for the double upgrade?

During the coming months features of this type (benefits of the eco-system) will expand and improve and, yes, next year there will be yet another quantum leap. I am writing this on an iPad Pro from 2015 and it has improved in functionality constantly for the last 4 years, and that’s before this huge step forward coming in the next 30 days. Added cost, zero. A product that improves for years after you buy it for free? Only Tesla is even attempting to match such a business ethos.

[gdgallery_gallery id_gallery=”7″]

Hardware, Chips and Components, Software, Services, Os’s All Evolving in Concert

It will take a series of articles to go into any kind of depth at all regarding how the machine learning and AI within the Apple ecosystem is evolving with amazing speed, how the various hardware design improvements are being optimized for just those uses. How a system which not only has constantly upgraded operating systems, but a growing and deepening array or application software (also “free”) all benefitting from each other.

“Buy any part, piece or product and you are pulled into a vortex of virtuous and redundant improvements, which obliterate cost comparisons.”

– D.L.

What this all adds up to is “just” better performance, functionality and expanded feature sets (as well as entirely new capabilities) across the entire constellation of devices, applications and services. Buy any part, piece or product and you are pulled into a vortex of virtuous and redundant improvements, which obliterate cost comparisons. Could this be the reason the most expensive iPhone is, once again, leading in sales volume? Why are people buying an iPhone 11 Pro Max with 256 GB? Why, indeed.

So, the genius idea to charge people every year or two for another bug filled monstrosity of an operating system is truly genius if you only care about money for nothing (hello windows and android universe).

If, on the other hand, you care about improved user experience, satisfaction and productivity, and have the increased creative and technological capabilities of the new cyborg army (that is the new human race) as job 1, well, to paraphrase a certain former President, it’s the eco-system, stupid.

Cats: Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Judi Dench inspire Piling On across the Twitter-verse

https://movietrailers.apple.com/movies/universal/cats/cats-trailer-2_h1080p.mov
NEW OFFICIAL TRAILER FOR “CATS”

About a month ahead of its release this December, Universal dropped a new trailer for its anthropomorphic “Cats” spectacle and social media users have responded in new and amusing variations. The newest trailer comes after the original trailer was released four months ago in July.

Universal’s “Cats” is a musical fantasy film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical of the same name, which was based on T.S. Eliot’s poetry collection from 1939 “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.”

The director of the notorious 2012 “Les Misérables” musical film adaptation Tom Hooper is directing the film with a screenplay co-written by him and British playwright and screenwriter Lee Hall, who wrote the screenplay for the 2005 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.”

The main subject of the public internet’s fixation and fascination with “Cats” is witnessing the strange-looking, computer-animated cat versions of its star-studded cast, which includes Taylor Swift, James Corden, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, Rebel Wilson, Ian McKellan, Judi Dench, and Idris Elba.

Hundreds of tweets surged following the new trailer, with cat jokes and memes, many a meme surrounding how freaky it is to see a human playing a cat and how equally terrifying it is to see their furry “naked” cat characters played by well known celebrities.

‘Joker’ Breaks $1 Billion, Surpassing ‘Deadpool’ As Most Successful R-Rated Movie Of All Time

https://movietrailers.apple.com/movies/wb/joker/joker-trailer-2_h1080p.mov
Second Official Trailer for “Joker”

Amidst Family-Friendly ‘Billionaire’ Movies, ‘Joker’ is the Only R-Rated Feature to Break the Mold

“Joker” came out nearly two months ago on October 4th. Upon release, it earned an immediate $93.5 million, giving it the highest-grossing October opening weekend ever. Recently, however, “Joker” broke yet another record, this time solidifying it as a financial success and a milestone movie.

Earlier this week, “Joker” became the first R-rated movie to earn more than $1 billion at the box office, edging out “Deadpool” as the most lucrative R-Rated film of all time.

Only a handful of movies have managed to break the $1 billion threshold. This year, “Joker” joins the likes of “Avengers: Endgame,” “Toy Story 4,” and “The Lion King” as a film that managed to earn ten figures. It is also Warner Brothers’ biggest success since “Aquaman,” which came out in December 2018 and grossed $1.2 billion.

Almost every movie to make over a $1 billion has been a family-friendly action-comedy blockbuster, nestled somewhere between a PG and PG-13 rating. This usually allows for a wider range of people to buy tickets. “Joker,” however, stands out as an R-rated sinister drama that made an artistic debut at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. The movie even received some backlash for its ultra-violent themes and its humanization of the criminally insane.

https://movietrailers.apple.com/movies/wb/joker/joker-teaser-1_h1080p.mov
Original Official Trailer for “Joker”

Public Obsession with ‘Joker’ Brings Alarm as Many Fear it could Spawn Copy Cats

Of course, the movie is about Batman’s arch nemesis and is technically under the DC Entertainment label. Thus, it was bound to find success from the beginning. Nevertheless, given “Joker’s” mature nature and radical subject matter, it remains quite impressive that the film is doing as well as it is.

Like most big-budget films nowadays, the majority of “Joker’s” success came from foreign ticket sales. The movie has earned $694 million abroad compared to $322.6 million domestic. However, Warner Brothers also managed to make this hefty figure without releasing the film in China, which is the second largest movie market in the world.

Some may find it disturbing that a movie focusing on the antagonist is drawing so much attention. Many fear that audiences will empathize with the Joker too much and perhaps try to follow in his deranged and violent footsteps.

Despite Criticism, Filmmakers Defend Artistry as a Potential Oscar Buzz surrounds the ‘Clown Prince’

Director Todd Phillips and lead actor Joaquin Phoenix (who plays the titular character) have heard these criticisms loud and clear, but they still defend their work. Essentially, they take the stance that filmmakers have artistic freedom to tell the stories they want to tell, no matter how unsavory the characters or how risky the themes. They contend that filmmakers (like any artists) do not have an obligation to teach viewers morality—it is up to the individual to interpret the story ethically and make the right choices.

Regardless, the criticism is not stopping people from seeing the movie. Evidently, millions of people from all around the world are flocking to theaters for “Joker.” Meanwhile, it is also getting positive reviews and potential Oscar buzz, especially regarding Joaquin Phoenix transformative performance as the Clown Prince of Darkness.

“Joker” as a whole is a divisive and morally ambiguous picture. The movie was a risk on Warner Brothers’ part and its ultimate legacy is yet to be determined. At the very least, though, Warner Bros knows that the risk paid off financially, and that they are cashing a big check for their fast and loose quasi-Batman anti-hero project.

Disney+ Vastly Exceeds its own Expectations, Achieving 10 Million Subscribers within First Day

https://movietrailers.apple.com/movies/lucasfilm/star-wars-the-rise-of-skywalker/star-wars-the-rise-of-skywalker-trailer-2_h1080p.mov
Star Wars

Streaming Wars are adding Choices for Consumers

Nobody ever doubted that Disney+ would be a success. From the second that the streaming service was announced, almost everyone knew that the website—which offers nearly every film and TV show in the Walt Disney catalogue—would be an enormous step forward for the company.

When Disney+ finally arrived on Tuesday, however, it did not just meet expectations. It immediately surpassed them, surprising even its parent company in the process.

Within twenty-four hours of the website’s launch, Disney+ reached over 10 million subscribers. This is a number that many did not expect Disney+ to reach for at least a year. To put it in perspective, Disney+ already has more subscribers than HBO Now, CBS All-Access, and Showtime… all reputable services that have been in existence for several years. Disney+ surpassed each of them in the course of a single day.

Of course, this is reason for the Walt Disney Company to celebrate. Even at the affordable price of $7 per month or $70 per year, Disney+ is bound to be a financial goldmine for the company.

That being said, not all of the 10 million current subscribers are guaranteed customers. Disney+ offers new members a seven-day free trial, so we can assume that at least a few people will binge for a week and then drop the service once they have to pay. Likewise, Verizon has offered the service for free to some of its users, which could account for some of the people lumped into Disney’s hefty figure.

Nevertheless, not even the higher-ups at Disney anticipated so many people to subscribe on day one. The website’s initial activity was so intense that it actually overwhelmed the service, leaving many users with Error pages and foreboding screens reading “Unable to Connect to Disney+” accompanied by Disney’s very own Wreck-It-Ralph. Over ten thousand reports of this took place on Tuesday, making many subscribers nervous. Luckily, Disney apologized for the inconvenience and swiftly adapted to the unexpectedly large number of patrons.

The service has been running smoothly ever since, offering users everything that it advertised. With very few exceptions, the service has every piece of Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar content along with Disney classics, National Geographic shows, and several original programs, most notably “The Mandalorian,” which is the first ever live-action series to take place in the Star Wars universe.

Baby Yoda / Photo / Disney

Do I sound like a Fan? Ok, sorry, you got me

And this is only the beginning! The service promises more originals including “WandaVision,” “Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” and “What If…?” under the Marvel banner as well as two more Star Wars series: one focusing on Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi from the prequel trilogy and another one focusing on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor from “Rogue One.” This is not even to mention all of the original movies, animated content, and pre-released Disney titles that are yet to make their way onto the service. Clearly, the current 10 million subscribers are only seeing the tip of the iceberg.

The only ones not celebrating Disney+ right now may be its streaming competitors. While Netflix responded to the Disney’s success with optimism, looking forward to improving their own brand with original content, Amazon, CBS, and other companies of the sort are probably shaking. Likewise, we can imagine that WarnerMedia, Apple, and NBCUniversal, each of whom are about to launch their own streaming services, are sitting on the edges of their seats, fearfully glaring at Disney’s instant accomplishment.

The streaming wars have begun. Many more armies are yet to arrive on the battlefield, but Disney+ has certainly made its presence known. Not even a week into its life, it is striding into combat with confidence, power, and a militia of 10 million soldiers, joyfully armed with a vast inventory of intellectual property that is far from tapped out.

Bring It On: Elon Musk & Tesla and the EV Explosion of New Models across the Auto Industry

https://video-lynxotic.akamaized.net/What-is-Mach.mp4
Ford MUSTANG Mach-E SUV Scheduled Announcement for Nov. 17

Ford Announcement is Harbinger of Avalanche of New EV Models are on the Horizon from virtually every Major Automaker

With today’s scheduled announcement of a new Ford Mustang EV and a slew of other companies rushing into the fray, the transition into more sustainable automotive transportation has gone into hyperdrive.

Since it’s founding in 2003, Tesla has been about two things: all electric zero emission electric cars and making them fun, fast and sexy.

The genius of this cannot be overstated. In retrospect, it can even be said that the auto industry intentionally tried to make EV’s, to the extent that they were developed at all, an experience like eating broccoli while everyone else at the table feasted on a cornucopia of delights. The idea appeared to be to intentionally fail and thereby take away the need for EV’s to be produced at all (and ICE vehicle production to continue uninterrupted)

Elon Musk and Tesla put a stop to all that. Facing incredible resistance and negative press bordering on sabotage, nevertheless the company persisted and stuck to the concept: EVs must be not only have a long range and be powerful but also be fast and fun like hell to drive.

Also, could it be that all the boring, staid productions and designs were built specifically to fail? That the fossil fuel industrial complex wanted to perpetuate itself (automakers included) and stop or at least slow down the transition to EVs?

For years, there was not much more than a trickle of projects at other manufacturers trying to follow suit. No more. Not only are there huge and growing numbers of new models either in production or soon to be produced, but longer term commitments and infrastructure investments, particularly by the top German automakers are being announced virtually by the day.

https://www.tesla.com/ns_videos/roadster_videos/roadster-loop-imperial.mp4?20180329
Tesla Roadster

Theses commitments follow not only close attention to the sales numbers and successes of Tesla’s Roadster, Model 3, S and X, but, with a high likelihood, huge companies are seeing that the tide is turning in awareness of the need for sustainable energy infrastructure among the general public.

Although there is plenty of debate as to whether battery based individual cars can be powered by primarily sustainable energy sources (Solar, wind, etc), it is clear that reducing CO2 emissions by phasing out, and eventually eliminating, ICE vehicles is a positive step forward.

Photo / Tesla

The Future can’t wait, and thankfully, Elon and Tesla Survived and Brought us All to this Moment

But the genius and power, seldom singled out for praise of any kind (even among Tesla fanatics), in finding “sexy” ways to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and of waging war against the capitalist world that itself created the problem of Global Warming, is mind-bendingly fantastic.

While this sounds almost insane at first blush, Elon Musk and Tesla are proving that, by focusing on making products that are not only environmentally progressive but also attractive to consumers, (using a marketing style straight out of Apple and Steve Jobs playbook) the “free market” can bring extreme pressure to bear on polluting fossil fuel behemoths and force them to change.

The brilliance of this is deep and formidable. In the end, it is “the people” that must stand up and act to change the ways that we travel and use transportation. It has been clear for half a century that a “top-down” approach where a kind of energy austerity is forced on the public is not possible and would bring great hardship. And voluntary change by the power structure went virtually nowhere in the last 50 years.

Why not find ways to make sustainable energy solutions and products that improve the transportation systems into aspirational objects of desire and status? Why not make green more than just politically correct but also cutting edge and satisfying to the lifestyles of the affluent and mobile in the G7 member countries?

Tesla Store in Hamburg, Germany

One Step Forward is better than Excuses not to Act, which has been the Stance of Government and Industry until now

And so what if battery factories are not yet able to run on 100% sustainable energy sources? Isn’t it better to start now and accelerate the transition to a better way? Tesla is also a solar company and a battery manufacturing company and is doing everything possible to upgrade all available technology to make its entire operation more completely sustainable and “green”.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic to see the rest of the auto industry (and indeed other industries and companies) to follow this path of prioritizing sustainable energy production and use?

Now, today, we see that a miracle has happened. Using great technology and product designs and marketing them with emphasis on the driving pleasure, speed and sexy fun, just as much as the environmental benefits Tesla has pulled and prodded the rest of the auto industry toward the future, and forced them to abandon all efforts to delay or impede the transition to sustainable energy in automotive transport.

In a war with a single company / entity against almost literally the entire world infrastructure, the war was won by the underdog, hands down.

Perhaps this is a lesson for the future: that winning the hearts, minds and the wallets of the general public, by creating products people love, can be an even better catalyst for positive change, than preaching suffering and guilt while clinging to the obsolete structures of the past.

Apple releases new 16-inch MacBook Pro, 80% Faster and, Finally, a new Keyboard

https://www.apple.com//105/media/us/macbook-pro-16/2019/fa0563a0-8534-4e01-a62a-081b87805fea/films/product/macbookpro-16-product-tpl-cc-us-2019_1280x720h.mp4

2nd Bombshell ? Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR also Released Today

World’s best Professional Notebook? Probably not even close

Right up front let’s state the obvious: sometimes bigger is better. This might be one of those times. 16 inches for a screen can help enormously to allow pro users to untether themselves from those huge multi-screen arrays with massive desktop functionality when traveling or just when that locked in feeling creeps up and creativity needs new scenery.

This idea is not to replace your upcoming new massive Mac Pro / Pro Display XDR combo (interestingly slated as of today for December availability) but to give you at least the feeling that you do not need to curtail the most power hungry activities while away from your main rig. And, if the specs herein are any indication, it will clearly enable you to do just that in all but the most demand situations. And with a max internal storage capacity of 8TB (yes, you are reading that right), for many, it could indeed replace an entire desktop workstation.

Here it is: The New Magic Keyboard

Billed as a “new scissor mechanism” but more importantly with a “rubber dome” that all of us hope will do away with the “dead” feeling of the now infamous “butterfly” keyboard. Headline is “comfortable and quiet”, but I think many would be satisfied if it is at least as nice as the “old” pre-butterfly model that was a durable dream to use. They put back the escape key (good job!) and, as this is the most expensive and fully decked out MacBook Pro ever, with the Touch Bar features and upgraded (fixed) keyboard we should be ready to rock.

More Power Demands a more Advanced Thermal Design

As processors get more and more powerful (here we have the 8‑core Intel Core i9) heat always becomes a potential issue and problem. As can be seen in the animated image above there has been a lot of effort put into dealing with this in an effective, elegant way. The improvements to the cooling capacity will allow the MacBook Pro 16″ to handle up to 12 more watts, while intensive workloads are present, compared with the previous MacBook Pro iteration.

100Wh Battery for 11 hours Browsing and an AMD Radeon Pro 5000M series GPU

For the largest screen and fastest processor, naturally, a bigger better battery is needed. The monster in question is a 100Wh (largest yet in a MacBook) and is said to add an extra hour of life, in spite of all the muscle under the hood.

With video and other intensive graphic workflows becoming more and more important (and software allowing more complex actions and higher video resolutions) a fast, powerful GPU is extremely crucial. It will be fantastic to see how far we can push the AMD Radeon Pro 5000M series graphics card which apple says is the first 7nm mobile discrete GPUs for pro users. External GPUs have been all the rage, perhaps the new 16 inch MacBook pro can dispense with the need via this AMD upgrade?

An 80% improvement in performance is claimed in comparison to the previous fastest-ever 8-core 15-inch MacBook Pro when equipped with the highest graphics options:

  • Video editors using DaVinci Resolve will see up to 1.8 times faster effects rendering when color grading.
  • Gamers will enjoy smoother gameplay with up to 1.6 times faster performance in games like Fortnite.
  • In Unity, developers will experience 1.4 times faster fly-through performance during game development.

And, yes, as you would expect, there are More Powerful Processors and Faster Memory

Again, the new MacBook Pro 16 inch (not coincidentally, released on the day that the Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR December release is also on the agenda) is all about computationally intensive tasks such as code rendering, graphics processing, up to 8k (!) video and so forth. In keeping with this goal, processors are beefed up 6- and 8-core 9th-generation with Turbo Boost speeds up to 5.0 GHz. Apple claims speeds up to 2.1 times faster performance than the quad-core 15-inch MacBook Pro. It’s possible to load this beast with up to 64GB and, also factoring in the result of the improved thermal design mentioned above, this could allow us all to blast through heretofore impossible tasks, if not with ease, at least with some fluency. According to Apple, when compared to the fastest quad-core 15-inch MacBook Pro:

  • Music producers can play back massive multi-track projects with up to 2.1 times more Amp Designer plug-ins in Logic Pro X.
  • Scientists and researchers will benefit from 2.1 times faster simulation of dynamical systems in MATLAB.
  • Developers using Xcode can compile code up to 1.8 times faster.
  • Photographers can apply complex edits to photographs 1.7 times faster in Photoshop.

Processor:

Configurable to 2.4GHz 8‑core Intel Core i9, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz, with 16MB shared L3 cache

Retina display

16″ Display:

16‑inch (diagonal) LED‑backlit display with IPS technology; 3072‑by‑1920 native resolution at 226 pixels per inch with support for millions of colors

Supported scaled resolutions:

  • 1920 by 1200
  • 1680 by 1050
  • 1280 by 800
  • 1024 by 640

Musk Announces Tesla’s 4th Gigafactory Location: Model 3 wins Midsize Car of the Year in Germany

https://video-lynxotic.akamaized.net/Musk-Giga4.mov
Elon Musk Accepting Award for the Model 3

Elon Musk made an appearance on German’s Auto Bild TV for the 2019 Golden Steering Wheels Awards (Die Verleihung des Goldenen Lenkrads 2019) showcasing the best cars of the year. While receiving an award, Musk announced that the location for the next Gigafactory will be in Berlin, Germany.

The first European Gigafactory will be situated near the newest airport in Berlin named the Brandenburg International Airport (BER). The airport is still under construction with reported plans for a 2020 opening date. Since the new Berlin airport location is already infamous for construction delays, Musk joked that the new Gigafactory would “hopefully” be completed more swiftly in comparison

Tesla’s site as of November 12th, now shows career opportunities in “Remote, Germany” for Gigafactory 4.

The Tesla Factory is located in Fremont, California, with Gigafactory 1 and 2 both based the United States in Sparks, Nevada and Buffalo, New York respectively. Gigafactory 3 is the first overseas factory in is located Shanghai, China.

In a tweet in June, Tesla’s CEO shared a potential teaser into the location of the European factory. The reality is, however, better- Berlin is in! The speed at which Gigfactories are popping up worldwide is impressive. Gigafactory 3, near Shanghai, that can build 150,000 Model 3 sedans a year, according to Tesla, was build in just 168 working days!

Musk has previously estimated that it will eventually take 100 Gigafactories to build the components necessary in order to run the entire world on sustainable energy. Naturally, as he also pointed out, Tesla alone could not build that many, and plans are for, eventually, an initial twelve to be built. So, 8 more in the pipeline now that #4 in Berlin has been announced. At the time of completion the first Gigafactory was the second largest building in the world by volume, with the largest footprint at 1.9 million square feet, hence “Giga”.

Musk flew his private jet to Germany on November 11th, curiously missing the successful launch of 60 Starlink Satellites – and now we know the main reason why he did. Shortly after the award cerimony, a couple of tweets went live. The first, announcing the award, and more importantly, the second detailing the initial plans for the factory’s uses: building powertains and vehicles, starting with the Model Y and, of course, batteries.

The Model 3 has been, by almost any measure, a spectacular success. Now, with the Model Y looming on the horizon, and the mysterious Tesla pickup truck set to be unveiled on November 21st at the Tesla Design Center in Hawthorne, CA, 2020 is sizing up to be another make or beak year for Tesla and Elon.

Alibaba does $38.3 Billion in 24 hours with the help of Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey and Kim Kardashian

https://f1.media.brightcove.com/12/5392214352001/5392214352001_5860365713001_5860365339001.mp4
MARIAH CAREY AT GLOBAL SHOPPING FESTIVAL 2019

Alibaba Group Holding Limited’s annual Singles’ Day sales event is held on the 11th of November. The origin of Singles’ Day comes from the event’s date, 11/11 or “double eleven,” which references the number one as it relates to being single and not in a relationship (one is the loneliest number after all). When it first occurred in 2009, it was a kind of anti-Valentine’s Day when single people could splurge and purchase gifts for themselves. In its more recent years, Singles’ Day has welcomed all, regardless of their relationship status, and has turned into a major online shopping event where consumers across the globe can buy name brand items at discounted prices. Because of its worldwide popularity, this ‘single’-day sales event was eventually rebranded into the Global Shopping Festival in 2015 as it became more like a “holiday season celebrated by merchants and consumers worldwide.”

This year immediately yielded huge numbers, with the company reporting $17 billion dollars (120.7 billion yuan) in just the first hour and a half alone. The first nine hours has yielded $22 billion dollars (158.31 billion yuan) and many project the sales to beat 2018, which brought Alibaba approximately $30 billion dollars worth of sales from Singles’ Day.

At the moment the clock hit 24 hours and $38.3 billion in GMV

Although it’s often dubbed as China’s equivalent to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Singles’ Day is much bigger. This year, within the first 68 seconds of the event, Alibaba Group achieved their first $1 billion in sales, and at the half hour mark, they recorded their first $10 billion in sales. After their first 24 hours, they surpassed the previous year’s record of $30.7 billion in sales with approximately $38.4 billion. In comparison, last year’s Black Friday grabbed just under $25 billion in total sales over a five-day period, while Cyber Monday, for example, had less than $8 billion.

Over 200,000 brands are participating, one million new products are on offer and more than 500 million users are expected to participate in this year’s festival – about 100 million more than last year. Estimated consumer savings from brand and platform promotions and coupons are around RMB 50 billion.

global shopping festival 2019 / alibaba group

Although Alibaba is a Chinese e-commerce site, nearly half a billion shoppers participate around the world as they bolster their global reach through their multiple websites dedicated to handling sales between China and specific global regions, with Hong Kong, US, Australia, UK, and Japan accounting for some of the international buyers that take part.

“This year, both buyers and merchants have more than doubled and we’ve already seen a series of record-breaking moments. We’re looking forward to sharing even more good news.”

Yin Jing, Co-President of Lazada, a Subsidiary of Alibaba Group

The event’s launch included a countdown celebration gala that was broadcasted from the Shanghai Mercedes-Benz Arena. Musical performances from Jackson Yee, G.E.M. and Taylor Swift, along with a live stream with Kim Kardashian, helped to promote sales further on the evening before the big day. Also, something noteworthy about this year’s event is that co-founder and former chairman Jack Ma was not present as he recently resigned in September of this year, which coincidentally lined up with the company’s 20th anniversary since it was first established.

Alibaba’s CTO Jeff Zhange described the event as an

“Airplane flying at turbo speed.”

Jeff Zhang, CTO of Alibaba

Additionally, he attributed this speed to the company’s biggest focus of making this “airplane” more efficient.

The 2019 event is particularly significant in regards to the continued US and China trade war, with many Chinese companies riddled with uncertainty about the future of their businesses, yet according to what Richard Wong, Head of ICT for APAC, stated to Bloomberg TV, “Alibaba will probably be the one that will be able to circumvent and come out from the trade war in better shape”.

Watch Mercury Transit across the Sun: last time until 2032 – starts at 7 a.m. ET

Mercury Transit / NASA

The Celestial Event of the year is happening now

This Monday, November 11th, will mark Mercury’s journey or transit where the planet passes between Earth and will be visible as it moves across the face of the Sun. The last transit happened in May of 2016 and will not happen again until 2032. According to NASA, this planetary event should be widely visible to most of the World and will lasts a little under six hours, making it convenient for most to be able to catch a glimpse.

Mercury will begin its trek and can be viewed starting at 7 a.m. ET and ending at around 1:45 ET, those in the west coast will have to wait until the sun rises to see anything. The tiny planet (the smallest planet in our Solar System) will be seen as a small round black sphere moving against the bright Sun. Mercury will cover an extremely small fraction 1/283 of the Sun’s diameter.

All those with interests in viewing the phenomenon that have access to a telescope (or binoculars) will have to utilize a minimum magnification of 50x and most importantly have proper solar filters to prevent damage to the eyes. Even without a telescope, it is advised to never look directly into the Sun without proper protective eyewear. The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) will be closely watching and recording video and images that can be seen safely in the comfort of any screen at nearly real time by visiting NASA’s 2019 Mercury Transit page.

Extinction Rebellion Video Increases political pressure as Elections Loom and Climate Survival is at Stake

https://video-lynxotic.akamaized.net/OnelifetimeXRMaster.mp4

XR Celebrity Allies Demand from Governments ‘#WhereIsYourPlan’

As we head into election season, the impending climate crisis demands immediate action, especially by our world governments. Extinction Rebellion (XR) is well aware of this as they release this celebrity collaboration short film that calls for everyone to demand their government’s plan to address the climate crisis, with the hashtag #WhereIsYourPlan.

“Through voices representing a lifetime, aged 8 to 80, the film demands that leaders around the world act on the climate and ecological emergency, including stopping the destruction of our forests, our oceans and our wildlife, reducing to global zero carbon emissions within 10 years and in investing in a green economy.”

Extinction Rebellion

This globally significant film was developed by legendary filmmaker Richard Curtis and world-renowned British photography agency RANKIN. Curtis is known for the famous works that include “Love, Actually”, “Notting Hill”, “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “Bridget Jone’s Diary”.

The celebrities featured include recognizable faces from “Downton Abbey” to “Love Island,” as well as Ellie Goulding, Jaime Winstone, Chris Packham, Daisy Lowe, Imelda Staunton, Stephen Frears, and Jim Carter.

Together, these high-profile entities from every generation raise their voices to unite everyone — no matter their race, age, gender, or nationality — against the current threat of the climate crisis. They stress that, collectively, we only have “one lifetime” to make an impactful change to evade the worst of what the crisis has in store at the current state of our environment.

From a Letter to the Media to a Video Message to the Government, XR Continues Fight Against Climate Crisis

This isn’t the first time that celebrities collaborated with XR in the campaign for climate action. Together, they wrote and signed a letter addressing the media, saying that they will not stop fighting for climate action no matter how many times the media tries to discredit the movement by inciting their unavoidable hypocrisy.

It’s not enough to wait for individual choices to line up with collective environmental values. We need mandated collective action against the corporate entities that continue to make matters worse for everyone on Earth, and this cannot happen without governments’ taking action on our behalf. Unfortunately, it takes a lot to get the government to collectively pay attention.

Even as XR continues to be banned from protesting by their own law enforcement in London, they refuse to let that stop them. On November 6th, they plan to defend their right to peaceful protest as the High Court delivers its official judgment on the Metropolitan Police’s decision to ban all XR protests in London during XR’s second week of the October Rebellion.

A Mass Tesla Fleet Invasion into Multiple Industries has Begun

https://www.tesla.com/sites/tesla/files/curatedmedia/the_future_of_autopilot.mp4
Tesla promotional video showing the future of autopilot

Your Next New York Taxi ride? It will likely Soon be a Tesla…

The Model 3 has just been approved to join New York City’s taxi fleet.

Among the 40 vehicles approved, Model 3 is the only fully-electric car on the list. Usually, cars only get this kind of certification whenever an automotive manufacturer or individual requests it, but that’s not without some specific standards.

Man Texting in front of Tesla Amsterdam Showroom – Photo / Lynxotic

The qualifications for a vehicle to be certified as a New York taxi cab are simple: it must meet a certain minimum of interior space, have air conditioning installed for, have space for the clear partition between the driver and passengers, and also have its seats covered with an easy-to-clean material. Once approved, these cars can have their official taxi cab equipment installed, which requires a standardized paint job, exterior taxi lights, taxi signage, taxi meter, and interior partition.

Previously, electric cars were seldom used as taxi cabs because of their limited range and power. This was found in an experimental program with Nissan Leaf electric cars that ended in 2015. The problem that the Taxi & Limousine Commission noticed was that drivers were burdened by the significant limits of electric-powered vehicles compared to gas-powered vehicles. It was an especially big burden during hot weather that required extensive use of the air conditioner, which became another battery-draining source that would shorten the vehicle’s already short range even more.

However, Elon Musk’s Tesla vehicles could represent a solution for that problem since the Model 3, for example, has a range of at least 220 miles, which is significantly longer when compared to the Nissan Leaf‘s estimated meager range of 84 miles. The future Long Range Model Y is planned to have an even longer range at 300 miles on a full charge, which matches the average range of a traditional gas-powered vehicle.

Police Department Investigating Tesla Fleet Purchase: Acceleration is Key

As an Allegheny County Sheriff experiments with using Tesla for their police department in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Tesla proves that it could compete in both power and performance against traditionally gas-powered vehicles.

The Allegheny police have reported to particularly enjoy the many technologically advanced features that Tesla has to offer, like its computer monitor, smooth handling, quiet engine, quick acceleration and automatic safety features.

Indeed, many of these Tesla features are particularly handy when it comes to the specific job requirements for police cars to perform at a standard well above the average vehicle. Their only caveat is its average range. Although its range has yet to rival gas-powered vehicles, Tesla has gotten close to the average range of traditional cars that range from 300 to 400 miles on a full tank of gas. This puts Tesla’s foot in the door of the car competition, and who knows how much Tesla’s range will increase in the future as their technology continues to advance and improve.

However, a long range isn’t the only requirement for a police car. It also needs to be incredibly fast, and this is where Tesla dominates. An average gas-powered vehicle could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 8 seconds, while Tesla’s electric vehicles (EVs) could reach that in as little as 5 to 3 seconds. At this rate, Tesla EVs are definitely capable of chasing and catching runaway vehicles before needing to recharge.

Additionally, Tesla EVs are a lot safer than traditional vehicles. Many of the Allegheny police deputies have noted how the Tesla would immediately start to break on its own after they put their foot off the gas pedal and before they even hit the breaks. Additionally, Tesla EVs are a lot more cost effective by saving money without the use of gasoline in the long run. The Allegheny sheriff deputy also calculated that Tesla EVs would save them about $17,000 over a period of five years compared to their gas-powered vehicles.

Tesla Scores #1 among EVs for a Low-Carbon Future

According to Moody’s Carbon Transition Assessments (CTAs), which measures an automotive company’s ability to transition into a more sustainable “low carbon future,” Tesla was the only car manufacturer to receive the highest possible score.

The multi-point scale, with the highest rating being CT-1 and the lowest being CT-9, determines how ready the company is to transition to producing cleaner vehicles with zero emissions. Although BMW, Honda, Toyota, Geely, and Beijing Automotive group also received high CTA scores among the 20 surveyed, they are significantly lower than Tesla’s top spot at CT-1.

Notably, electric car sales have increased three-fold, while diesel vehicle sales have lost appeal and plummeted at rapid rates. With this in mind, the future of electric vehicles looks brighter as their demand and production continues to grow significantly, and every other automotive company needs to catch up.

Moody’s predicts that we will need more intensive carbon emissions testing on global car manufacturers in the near future. This comes at an important time when countries have set out crucial deadlines for petroleum phase-out goals during the expedited transition to clean, sustainable energy in light of the present climate crisis.

Moody’s 20-car-manufacturer assessment also puts an end to the circular argument that many critics of the electric vehicle movement have through the faulty narrative that EV production does more harm to the environment than good.

As Tesla’s production and technology becomes more advanced and sustainable, they are knocking over the barriers that previously held electric vehicles back from popular use. Tesla is well on their way to rivaling the range, speed, power, and performance of gas-powered vehicles. The future of clean transportation no longer has to settle for a lower quality of life and has the potential to create something even better than what we have now.
