See Ben Affleck as Knightmare Batman in Zack Snyder’s upcoming ‘Justice League’

https://video.twimg.com/amplify_video/1328726078379048960/vid/960x720/AjtjmV2o1BPm1-4l.mp4?tag=13

The return of the Caped Crusader

Straight from a recent Justice League photo shoot, Zack Snyder shared a new Batman image.  Fans can catch a glimpse of (Ben Affleck) suited up in the Knightmare version.  Albeit, you only see his backside, it definitely helps to hype-us-up for his Director’s Cut, which is coming in a little over a month’s time.

Snyder shared the back of Batman, wearing a trench coat, the same one he wore in “Batman vs. Superman”. It was confirmed during a live commentary track for “Batman vs. Superman”, that there would be a Knightmare sequence, one in which Bruce Wayne dreams of a hellish/dystopian future, and Superman has become a servant of Apokolips (with potential to set the stage for “Justice League with the teaser trailer”!?)

The director also posted a homage to the Joker.

The new updates about Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League and the format came to surface at the beginning of the year.  Originally the concept was that the 4 hours of the first cut would be separated into one hour segments ( indicating more like a multi-part series), however based on a screenshot posted from the director’s Vero account, it will actually be a full, non-stop, 4-hour movie.

We will just have to wait and see all the changes and additions to “Justice League”, the countdown begins and it will, finally, be available to stream on HBO Max starting on March 18, 2021.

The upcoming film was created by Sam Levinson (also writer, producer and director of “Euphoria”) and was among the first films that were put together during the pandemic.  It has been reported that the production team went above and beyond with precautions to be compliant with the covid-19 protocols.

“Malcolm & Marie” focuses in on a couple’s conversation regarding their past relationships.

The film, which is scheduled for release Feb. 5, has already started to stir up talks of an Academy Award nomination for Zendaya, and as can be hinted from trailer she gives highly charged, emotional performance.

“I am so grateful to this cast and crew, many of whom are my ‘Euphoria’ family, for coming together during such uncertain times. We felt privileged to be able to make this film together and we did so with a lot of love. We are all thrilled that it has ended up with Netflix which is unparalleled in allowing filmmakers the freedom to tell their stories that reach audiences all over the world.”

New Cringeworthy Robinhood Super Bowl Ad, plus 16 New Spots to check out before game-time

Looking like a slowdown and shift to new sponsors for 2021

Super Bowl LV airs live on CBS and CBS All Access on Sunday, February 7th kicking off at 6:30 p.m.  Before you see one of the biggest sporting events of the year when the Chiefs and Buccaneers (with Tom Brady) take the field, below are sneak peaks of some of the ads set to air during the big game.

With a few exceptions many of the usual sponsors are back. Tide, Pringles, Amazon, Cheetos, Doritos, Frito Lay, M & M’s and, of course, Bud Light. But a few notable newcomers include Square Space, Rockstar Energy and the ad that already has people cringing, Robinhood.

After the incredible backlash against the app restricting trading in GameStop, AMC, BlackBerry and others, for many the ad falls flat, crashes you might say. Probably a great test of the theory that any publicity is good publicity. They have seen a surge in signups. Go figure. Check the ad below and then take a look at the 16 we collected as a preview to the big day.

Stories from Past Crises can Reveal New Insights as we Encounter huge Challenges

https://movietrailers.apple.com/movies/paramount/thebigshort/thebigshort-onlinespot_h1080p.mov

Right now, the best movies on the financial crises of 2008 and 2000 and stock trading in general are all trending on the streaming rental market, since they are nearly impossible to find on subscription based platforms such as Netflix, HBO Max, Disney +, etc.

As a result, paid views have skyrocketed, for example, on iTunes, where “The Big Short” is #3 and “Wolf on Wall Street” is #4

This surge applies to other films such as the excellent ‘Boiler Room” with Giovanni Ribisi. The films are all excellent and worth paying for if the chaotic craze with huge money gained and lost with GameStop, AMC and the whole Reddit, Robinhood brouhaha has you curious to learn more about the financial markets.

The reality is sinking in, slowly, that the future is truly unknowable and that big changes and even bigger challenges are looming. Twin shocks of a health emergency and a financial crisis, intertwined and yet with separate trajectories, are still to be resolved in our near future.

And then there’s the myriad of other challenges that were already acute, such as global warming and the “other” epidemic; corruption and greed. It’s almost too much to face up to, and no one can be blamed for wanting to just turn away.

Too much has been glossed over. After the 2008 crisis we all just wanted to put that ugly mess behind us and get on with our lives. I suppose the criminals that netted billions as a “reward” for almost destroying the entire global economy were also eager to just move on.

All that as it may be, perhaps, a way to begin the process of regaining our courage and looking into the future with some kind of hope, or at least a deeper understanding of the human dilemma and historical precedents, might be to enjoy films about small moments of triumph before great adversity. Here are a few recent options:

The Big Short:

https://movietrailers.apple.com/movies/paramount/thebigshort/thebigshort-fte1_h1080p.mov

Barely 12 years ago, the financial collapse and ensuing “Great Recession” was a nightmare scenario. The aftermath of that debacle is also a contributor to the economic dangers we see before us in 2020. This film, likely the best based on that era, highlights how outsiders and misfits were able to prosper, even as they witnessed the corruption, failure and systemic injustice that brought the world to the brink of total economic chaos.

Starring: Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt.

‘Wolf of Wall Street’:

The Wolf of wall street is simply a great movie. It’s even better though if you watch it in the context of stock market mania. Just like the one that’s happening now.

Beyond the fact that the story is incredibly entertaining it does also get into the heart of the “pump & dump” boiler room mentality. While the so called ‘retail investors” who are riding the Robinhood stock purchasing app to what they see as well deserved revenge on Wall Street, and Belfort who was the real life “Wolf of Wall Street” was more of a wannabe that couldn’t get into the establishment.

He then set forth, with chutzpa and insanity and some drugs, built his own criminal empire, there are some very clear correlations between his tricks that made him rich and what the short-squeezing Reddit & Wall Street Bets chat room vigilantes are doing right now.

Can we all be like the guys, Jordan Belfort or Michael Burry, who was played by Christian Bale in the movie, and even though it was about going short, it’s sill ok, cause, Christian Bale?

For a bird’s-eye overview and scientific perspective – Athropocene is a film for those ready to think deeply on how, once beyond the immediate danger, we would want to emerge into a new era as a species. A positive reaction to the current crisis, worldwide, has been a series of ideas and proposals that show a willingness to confront the challenges from an entirely new perspective. Maybe new leadership can mean starting over and making a pledge to try a new approach to literally everything.

‘The film follows the research of an international body of scientists, the Anthropocene Working Group who, after nearly 10 years of research, argue that the Holocene Epoch gave way to the Anthropocene Epoch in the mid-twentieth century as a result of profound and lasting human changes to the Earth.”

Cinderella Man

This Depression era feel-good story takes on new meaning as we see a “Great Depression II” potentially looming. Looking for strength and courage facing forces that threaten our survival, and coming out at the end in a better place, that’s a synopsis and blueprint we can all benefit from observing, even if it’s packaged as a Hollywood vehicle. Russel Crowe at his best. Maybe worth a second look.

Night Stalker hits #3 on Netflix: Series Delves into Mid-eighties Crime Spree

Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer / Netflix

Streaming started January 13.  This historical limited series is a documentary that follows the young detective Gil Carrillo and legendary homicide investigator Frank Salerno as they work expeditiously to catch the “Night Stalker”. Beneath the sunlit glamour of 1985 LA lurks a relentlessly evil serial killer. In this true-crime story, two detectives won’t rest until they catch Richard Ramirez, who was eventually arrested for his terrible crimes.

A gradual climb up the internal Netflix chart has kicked the limited series up to #3 for the weekend. The quality of the presentation seems to be the draw and the time frame that it deals with – the mid-eighties – has been au du jour of late – with Wonder Woman 1984 and other films that focus on that unique decade and its zeitgeist. Check out the trailer below if you want a taste:

Scarlett Johansson will make her first solo movie as the iconic character ‘Black Widow’ aka Natasha Romanoff, as well as set out to be the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow” has already been delayed, originally set for release in May 2020 and pushed again to December, a year later is now slated for the new release date of May 7, 2021.  With the pattern of postponements to the film, another delay would not be much of a surprise.

GameStop, Dogecoin, Robinhood and Stonks: What’s going on!? We’ve got the real answers here

Confusing? Yea, but at the bottom it all it’s just…(parody)

It you have followed any of the unfolding madness with the “retail investors” and the revolution of unstoppable market manipulation that is heroic, not criminal cause, um, the other guys (Wall Street) are much more criminal.

Read more: “GameStonks vs. Wall Street”

The problem is, it’s all true! Yes, the idea that pumping up GameStop, which is basically a random stock that was cheap and easy to pump. This is basically making a mockery of the traditional idea of investing and of the laws against stock manipulation. But the market is, as so many are pointing out, basically a sham already.

Read more: Elon Musk, AOC, GameStop, Robinhood, Short Selling Hedge Funds

A lot is made of the bad and nasty “shorts” who think that, just because GameStop is a company with basically no future prospects, they think the price would like, do down. Strange. That’s ok though, we can pump it up and the squeeze force the shorty shorts to cover (buy back shares) and that will send the price soaring.

short shorts by Tesla

Then we can all be like the Wolf of Wall Street, Jordan Belfort and also totally like The “Big Short” guy, Michael Burry, who was played by Christian Bale in the movie, and even though it was about going short, it’s sill ok, cause, Christian Bale.

2008 was bad and done by very bad people that got away with it

And yes, it’s pretty much all a nasty business. But the nasty pros are the worst. And the whole system is a sham. And, anyway 2008. Right. Maybe this is like occupy Wall Street but for real. Occupy it literally inside of the market. Where they live.

So, in a nutshell it’s a mockery of a sham. And a travesty. So it’s a mockery of a sham and a travesty.

Seriously., though, perhaps pumping cheap stocks from around 5-10$ up to $500 or higher by coordinated buying executed by internet mobs should be made legal. Each “investor” can jump in and out where-ever they choose and daisy-chain into the wealth that dreams are made of.

Universal basic is basically good, really good

Perhaps this can be the new government stimulus plan. Give every citizen a “free” stock buying app like Robinhood (but a new one cause we all hate those guys now) and have each account pre-loaded with, say, $1000.

Then let everyone know that it’s ok to join Reddit groups or watch TikTok stock market gurus and everyone, like a swarm of locusts can just pump a stock up to the moon and then sell and crash it and move on to the next one.

Naturally, it will be necessary to always start with a stock that is cheap so the early buyers can get really, really rich when the stock (who care what company it is, right?) goes up around 32,000% is, say, a week. That’d be good.

I am looking for how this casino of the common man would be worse that the current system, and it’s hard to find a flaw. Maybe read a book? Naw, just buy and buy and get rich with stonks forever. Amen.

Disney Animation Showcase: new trailer for ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’

https://video.twimg.com/amplify_video/1354051215131357184/vid/866x360/W1E_yzW8RdendOD3.mp4?tag=13

First look at Disney’s new adventuress and superhero

The recently dropped trailer gives Disney lovers a glimpse of the upcoming movie inspired by Southeast Asian folklore.  Voices will feature Kelly Marie Tran as Raya  and Awkwafina as Sisu, the dragon.  Writer, Qui Nguyen spoke about the character Raya in an interview, being a new kind of female lead, and her special qualities as more of a “superhero” than a “princess”.

“Raya and the Last Dragon” will premier simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access (additional fee required apart from Disney+ monthly subscription)  on March 5, 2021.

“Growing up in Southeast Asia, we’re very proud of our culture and our history. But you don’t really ever see it on a Hollywood big screen. I had lots of action heroes on screen growing up, but it was like Hong Kong action kung fu. And now, the idea to be part of a Disney movie that can really celebrate everything that’s beautiful about our culture and how strong our women are is great. And that Raya’s not just an ass-kicker. She’s got so much personality. I feel that it’s so much of the spirit of a lot of the women I grew up with. And so, I’m very excited for the world to see this too.”

Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim

Disney’s synopsis:

“Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when sinister monsters known as the Druun threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, those same monsters have returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the last dragon in order to finally stop the Druun for good. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than dragon magic to save the world—it’s going to take trust as well.”

Amazon Prime Video: 10 Top Movies included with your Subscription

When you just want to find the best without sorting trough all the rest

With all various streaming platforms so readily accessible, it can be a real struggle to figure out what to watch on any given day.  Aside from new releases, there are often a handful of recent or classic movies and Amazon originals you may have overlooked.  Amazon Prime videos can also be tricky to navigate as you can search practically any TV show or movie, but that doesn’t always mean it will be free to watch for subscribers. It can be a real let-down to finally find the movie you want to watch and realize it’s going to cost you $, sometimes mega $ if it is a current release.

Unlike Netflix, where the same movies keep circulating within various sub-categories of curated recommendations, the problem with Amazon is that there are virtually unlimited choices but the sections featuring the “included with Prime” options are, similar to Netflix, confusing to navigate at times. It’s almost as if they want to make it appear as if there are many more available than is actually the case, even as you stumble on the same titles again and again in a different mixture.

Warner Bros. police thriller ‘The Little Things’: When to watch in theaters and HBO Max

https://movietrailers.apple.com/movies/wb/the-little-things/the-little-things-trailer-1_h1080p.mov

Above: Official Trailer of ‘The Little Things’

Another serial killer thriller- how will this latest release stack up?

Another anticipated  HBO Max movie from Warner Brothers is “ The Little Things”. The movie stars not one, but three Oscar winners: Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto. Denzel Washington plays a Kern County Deputy Sheriff, Joe “Deke” Deacon, who joins forces with homicide sergeant Jim Baxter played by Rami Malek to search for a serial killer who’s terrorizing Los Angeles.

As they track the culprit, Baxter is unaware that the investigation is dredging up echoes of Deke’s past, uncovering disturbing secrets that could threaten more than just his case.  Jared Leto , plays a menacingly creepy Albert Sparma, a stringy hair, electrical repairman who is pegged as the suspected serial killer.

Those that got an early viewing of the movie have made mention that the film has elements of other serial killer movies including: “Seven” and “Zodiac”. As always, there are those that liked the movie and talk-up its all-star cast, while others have given it low ratings claiming it just did not hit the mark. Those that have the HBO Max streaming platform will get the chance to watch for a month after its release which is scheduled for the end of the January (2021).

Writer-director John Lee Hancock has been waiting over 20 years to put his neo-noir script of a classic Hollywood case onto the big screen. The film is set in the 1990’s and plays tribute to the old school nature of detective work, before cell phones and technological advances like DNA profiling became commonplace with investigative police work.

“The Little Things” debuts in theaters on January 29, and isavailable on the HBO Max streaming platform for 30 days from that date (as will be the case for all 2021 Warner Bros. theatrical titles).

You’d think it’d be not only people randomly landing on a slightly older film and checking it out for kicks, but also, after watching that they’d pass the idea along in social media or to friends “at the water cooler” that no longer exists, right?

Whatever the mysterious way that it happens, the result at the moment is this credible, decent romantic action film with James Franco and Jason Statham has ascended to nearly the top spot, at #2 as of this writing.

Why Netflix’s ‘Lupin’ was a Smash and Millions are waiting for the next batch in the series

photo

Classical, new and skillful presentation make spoken english optional

Omar Sy plays Assane Diop in ‘Lupin’, a limited Netflix series that has become a somewhat unexpected hit. While there have been some successful streaming hits with original French production and english sub-titles, this time it’s not an impediment but a feature.

This observation – that a challenge to read rather than only hear the shows, is followed by many more pleasant and highly satisfying surprises, as the viewer is pulled into the larger story. (some may have dubbed english available, but subtitles provide the meaning without forsaking the nuance of the original acting performances)

The first French language series to hit #1 on the platform, the Netflix original series, produced by Gaumont and created by George Kay, in collaboration with François Uzan, was viewed by over 70 million households, in estimates, during its first month.

Read more: Netflix excites with 71 Movies to be released during 2021

The title gives away the first layer of the story – that it is based on the main character’s obsession with the Arsène Lupin novels by Maurice Leblanc, which began after Assane Diop, played by Omar Sy, received one of the novels as a gift from his father, (Fargass Assandé), for his birthday.

The depth of Assane’s lifelong obsession with Arsène Lupin, and the degree to which it gave him a purpose in life, a unique identity and more, is the base fabric and foundation of the tale.

The basic concept is that the impressionable, highly intelligent boy, transforms himself into “Lupin, gentleman thief” all with no more than intense, diligent and concentrated study of the book(s).

A harmony of elements…

But the way that it is told – with various flashbacks to Assane’s formative teen years, contrasted with the “today” narrative and then interspersed with various time-frames to emphasize moments in the long journey of his life, is where the story leaps off the screen.

The fact that his ex-wife, Claire (Ludivine Sagnier) with whom he has a son, Raoul (Etan Simon), around the age, Assane, himself, was when he was gifted the book that changed his life, and she was a big part his life ever since he was a teenager, makes for a circular story that has a ring of truth and yet the beauty of a dream.

The casting – Sy’s ability to portray the character at various ages, along with the teenage versions of both Assane and Claire makes the flashbacks extremely satisfying, like films within the film, Mamadou Haidara as Young Assane and Ludmilla Makowski as Young Claire are particularly well cast and play off each other with delicious chemistry.

The sparing use of technology, in the portrayal of the heist scenes, which gradually changes with each episode, give the modern setting a classical feeling that is entirely appropriate and a nice touch, as so many modern dramas fumble with the task of how to portray cell phone addiction and social media without either oversimplification or over use as a screen device.

From acting performances to the casting, scene realization and more, all intertwine with elegance, much like a Lupin novel

The story builds with each episode and the fifth and final installment of part one, ends on a cliffhanger, as is expected, but the various threads of the story each have the feeling of only having begun to bear fruit, leading to even more lust for a continuation.

Fortunately, Netflix has already finished production on the second batch and the release has been confirmed for later in 2021.

Any who enjoyed and absorbed the first part of the series, up until the dangling final moments, will only have to wait months, not years for the conclusion, or at least the continuation of the saga. Stay tuned.

According to Legendary production and Warner Brothers Pictures:

“In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages.

As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.”

Originally set for May 21, 2021, this is different kind of news, as its been very typical due to ongoing pandemic and theater closures that movies have been delaying the release.

For “Godzilla vs. Kong”, it’s the opposite, the movie will be released nationwide to both theater and the HBO Max streaming platform (as is the deal for all 2021 Warner Brother titles) early than previously scheduled. Streaming will be available for 30 days starting on the new theatrical release date of March 26, 2021.

Jonathan Scott’s Solar Movie: Frustrated with Warren Buffett, Property Brothers star decided to act

Renovate the future could be an apt title for “Power Trip”

Perhaps a reality TV star is not the first place or person one would think of when considering the next cutting edge filmmaker to take on the corruption and controversies surrounding the potential transition to sustainable energy.

However, as someone who, on his show, is seen as an expert in home renovation, particularly high end homes, a solar-roof and energy installation is becoming standard and so it is natural that Johnathan Scott, Co-Host of the series of “Property Brothers” shows and associated products would have been exposed to the ins and outs of installing solar panels.

More surprising, however, is the way his experiences took him on a journey of discovery that led to him creating a serious and hard-hitting documentary film on the challenges and even the politics surrounding the solar industry. His eye-opening discoveries mirror his experiences and, by extension, give viewers of the film an opportunity to see this controversial state of affairs through his sympathetic eyes.

FROM PBS.ORG:

In “Power Trip”, Property Brothers co-host and home-renovation expert Jonathan Scott journeys all across the U.S. to uncover why clean, renewable energy isn’t available to all. While traveling to learn both the obstacles and opportunities for achieving energy freedom, Jonathan talks with conservatives fighting for solar freedom; sits down with farmers struggling to make ends meet; engages coal workers desperate for a new, healthy means of making an income; the Navajo Nation who built a utility-scale solar plant; religious leaders who made a desperate attempt to help meet their community’s energy needs; and politicians at the forefront of the battle for energy freedom.

Shortly after they finally approved us, they killed net metering in Nevada. And all of us a sudden, solar companies left the state, and my head sort of spun, and I was like, “What the hell is going on here?” And that’s when I started digging in. I hired a researcher. And we discovered this secret war being waged against rooftop solar.

While the film may not be from a major name in the sustainable energy or climate crisis movements, for that very reason, one could say it has potentially enhanced credibility or at least a more approachable back-story with an experienced TV host known to many for his more traditional fare.

  • JONATHAN SCOTT’S POWER TRIP
    • Premiered November 16, 2020
    • Took 3 and a half years to produce
    • story about corruption that he fell into when trying to solar his roof in NV
    • Best known for his HGTV reality show “Property Brothers”, where Jonathan and his brother Brew purchase and renovate houses on a budget.

“The film explores how utility companies across the country have fought to maintain their monopolies, focusing on power players including Buffett’s NV Energy, Duke Energy in North Carolina and Southern Company subsidiary Georgia Power.”

More quotes from Jonathan Scott:

“It turned into a human story. I traveled around the country. I met with hundreds of people from all different walks of life. And I discovered that across the board, whether they are Republican, Democrat, conservative, liberal, city dwellers, country dwellers — everybody agreed that renewable energy was a good thing. They liked the idea of being able to produce their own power. The only people I found that were against it were people affiliated with fossil-fuel companies or the utilities.”

“We need some sort of national energy policy that will not only bring that cost down and simplify the process, but also promote what is the future of energy. When I started the film, there were 20 coal-fired power plants slated to be built in the U.S. By the end, all of those projects were either abandoned or shut down. And that’s a good thing. We are moving in the right direction.”

“But solar is still being met with opposition. The new trend is that a lot of utilities are saying, “We’re pro-solar, we’re pro-renewable energy.” They support utility-scale solar farms, but they’re anti-rooftop solar because they want to own the power.”

“I was a big fan of Warren and all the stuff he’s done. Then I saw him talking about how net metering is a subsidy. Either he was severely misinformed by the people who work for him who run NV Energy, or he was lying through his teeth. Warren is an intelligent guy, and I don’t think he would ignorantly run a company of that magnitude without knowing what’s happening.”

From NatGeo: Uganda is still what travelers consider an ‘insider tip’. Off the tourist map, a place still in the shadows of its past. Visitors, including scientists and conservationists, had a difficult time in the civil war-stricken country. Poaching had endangered many of Uganda’s most iconic animals including Mountain gorillas, cave elephants, the chimpanzees and even the tree-dwelling lions. But now the national parks have been restored and Uganda’s wildlife is once again thriving. This is a celebration of their survival.

More coming your way this January 2021
