Taylor Swift’s surprise concert only on Disney+ – Check out when to watch ‘Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions’

Sleuthing Swifties discover surprise Easter egg on social media

Taylor Swift delighted fans everywhere with a seemingly out of the blue announcement of her latest project. The concert film will be available exclusively on Disney+ streaming platform.

Taylor took to her social media to send a cryptic message, her notorious easter egg “Not a lot going on at the moment”. Fans  quickly figured out that the artist used the same caption when she was working on the album ‘Folklore’ and knew that big news was brewing.

The news comes after even more good news for the 10-time Grammy Award winner;  at the 2020 American Music Awards, Taylor took home three awards: Artist of the Year, Favorite Music Video of the Year (for her No. 1 song “Cardigan) and Favorite Female Artist in Pop/Rock category.

The film was shot in September 2020 at the upstate New York studio, ‘The Long Pond’ alongside Swift’s co-producers Aaron Dessner (The National) and Jack Antonoff (Bleachers).  Justin Vernon of Bon Iver made a guest appearance purportedly to perform in a duet for the song “Exile” (her upcoming single).

“There’s something about the complete and total uncertainty of life. If we’re going to have to recalibrate everything, we should start with what we love the most first,” Swift says. “It’s an album that allows you to feel your feelings and it’s a product of isolation.”

The three musicians secretly filmed the performances using a robotic camera in order to adhere to covid-19 guidelines.

The intimate “Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions” will premiere on Disney+ on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at midnight.

Barack Obama has done his first TikTok and the Reading of his Book live is blowing up the app

The Book and now the Man are minting TikTok  Memes all night long

Using the hook line “Take this and pass it on” Barack Obama appeared in his first bonafide TikTok and, while handing his new book “A Promised Land” to someone Offscreen, he lays the tagline down.

This, if you are familiar with TikTok nomenclature and virality is an invitation to add your own video, where for example you “receive” the book he is handing off, creating the illusion that you had it handed to you by the former president, known as a Duet.

https://video.twimg.com/ext_tw_video/1329817779269214209/pu/vid/576x1024/n1DkrToAFmEw367I.mp4?tag=10

These are already being produced and many variation will be coming soon. In the meantime an organic meme has already taken hold – one of people reading passages from his book aloud, unboxing their very own copy, speaking to the camera with a loving, adoring review, showing off Barack and Michelle’s books side by side, proposals to start a bookclub with “A Promised Land” as the first title, Crying with joy as they listen to the audio-book version, repost of the audio, A Trump impersonator reading (and insulting) in Obama’s voice, A slide-show with a famous Obama speech as an audio track, and many, many more.

Although this first TikTok from the former President was posted to the Publisher Penguin’s account, there’s a lot of hope, an audacious amount of hope you could say, that Obama will create his own personal account and become a regular or at lease occasional TikTok creator.

Trump Transition Chaos is subject of Obama produced ‘The G Word’: Netflix Comedy

Above: Photo Collage / Lynxotic

Art meets and imitates life squared in new Comedy series inspired by Trump and Produced by the Obamas

Barack and Michelle Obama are producing a sketch comedy series for Netflix inspired by Trump’s 2016 presidential win and transition. The Obamas’ production company “Higher Ground” will bring in U.S. comedian to host the show, which has been titled,  “The G Word with Adam Conover”. Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions has a multi-year agreement to produce films and series (both scripted and unscripted) for Netflix.

Also available on Amazon.

The streaming series is loosely inspired by the book “The Fifth Risk” by Michael Lewis. Written in 2018 his book is about the narrative of the Trump administration’s botched presidential transition, and takes us into the engine rooms of a government under attack by its leaders through willful ignorance and greed.

Interestingly, Barack Obama was himself a topic and participated, to some degree, in the transition and it is interesting to imagine what, if any, insight he may have been able to ad to the comedic potential of the subject matter.

The Federal Government manages a vast array of critical services that are meant to keep us safe and underpin our lives, from ensuring the safety of our food and drugs and predicting extreme weather events to tracking and locating black market uranium before the terrorists do. Trump’s lack of interest or ability in managing the transition, let alone the Government itself, is the basic fodder for the comedic premise.

BoJack Horseman treatment could yield fantastic and funny results

Adam Conover confirmed the news on Twitter; “Very happy to finally be able to share this news: I’m creating a new comedy series for Netflix about the federal government. It’s called The G Word, and I can’t wait to share it with you.”

Conover is known for “Adam Ruins Everything” and “BoJack Horseman” and will use his comedic chops to blend sketch comedy with documentary elements, as the focus of the show is, in normal times, a pretty serious one,  the government.

Netflix’s press release shared a little more light into what the show will bring to viewers:

”Using fast-paced visual comedy, Conover reveals the profound power and complexity of the U.S. government, introduces viewers to the heroic civil servants who make it work, and takes an incisive satirical look at its shortcomings.”

NETFLIX PRESS RELEASE

Filming is set to begin sometime early 2021, during the same general time as  Barack Obama’s former vice president Joe Biden will be taking office as the 26th President.

COVID Curfew Set to Kick in for 90% of California on Saturday, After 1/4 Million US Deaths, Newsom Says

Above: Walmart shopp stocks up for quarantine. Photo Lynxotic

Similar to the Curfew in place during the initial surge in March, the curfew requires most non-essential work, movement and gatherings to stop between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. This time around the 30 day oder will be in effect from Saturday, November 21st until Monday, December 21st.

Clearly after more than 1.3 Million deaths and a rising tide of confirmed cases reaching towards 12 million since the pandemic started, there is concern that a laissez fare approach, such as that championed by the Trump administration, could result in an outcome that borders on unthinkable.

“The virus is spreading at a pace we haven’t seen since the start of this pandemic and the next several days and weeks will be critical to stop the surge. We are sounding the alarm. It is crucial that we act to decrease transmission and slow hospitalizations before the death count surges. We’ve done it before and we must do it again.

—California Governor Gavin Newsom in a press release today

Regardless of the various competing studies that tout or play-down the effectiveness of wearing masks, social distancing and just plain staying home, not to mention the hope for a speedy vaccine to become available and disseminated, the so called “lock-down” is one of the few things that have sown to be effective worldwide in at lease limiting the acceleration of the spread of the deadly affliction.

While it is to be expected that various factions will create political backlash for Newsom and may even try to use this as a way to cast aspersions toward “democratic” cities, states and governments, ultimately most people do understand  that, as inconvenient it may be to wear a mask and stay home during an imposed curfew or time restriction, having a loved one dying of covid-19, or succumbing to it yourself,  is a far more inconvenient outcome.

AppleTV+ partners with PBS to give viewers some holiday cheer

In October, Apple announced it was teaming up with Peanuts Worldwide and gained the exclusive rights for all “Peanuts” assets, including the beloved specials: “Its The Great Pumpkin, CharlieBrown”, “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, and “A Charlie Brown Christmas” for AppleTV+ video streaming.

After the acquisition, many Americans worried they might miss “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” as it was no longer available for broadcast television, which would have been the first time in several decades that this Holiday tradition would be unavailable to a wider audience. Rest assured, Peanuts fans, for the remaining holiday season, luckily, the Peanuts gang will be back on television, for either via broadcast on PBS or to stream on AppleTV+.

Also available on Amazon.

AppleTV+ will launch “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” on Nov 18 and it will be available to stream free from Nov 25-27. The Thanksgiving special will be aired on PBS on Nov 22 at 7:30 p.m.  In December, AppleTV+ will also premiere “ A Charlie Brown Christmas” on Dec 4, with the holiday special available to enjoy for free from Dec 11-13.  The holiday special will also air on PBS on Dec 13 at 7:30 p.m.  The specials will be ad-free.

Apple established ties with Peanuts back in 2018, the agreement initially called for the company to help develop new series and specials featuring the iconic comic strip characters: Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and Peppermint Patty.  Apple has since produced brand new animated Apple originals like “Snoopy in Space”, which was nominated for a Daytime Emmy and will include a second second. As well as the upcoming brand new original AppleTV+ series “The Snoopy Show” set for release in Feb 2021.

‘Wonder Woman: 1984’ gets Twin Release on HBO Max and in Theaters on Christmas Day

HBO option will not have uncharge giving viewers a safe stay-at-home option

“Wonder Woman: 1984” (WW84) has had a bumpy road finding a release date. The DC follow-up to Patty Jenkins’ sensational 2017 “Wonder Woman” was originally meant to hit theaters last year, on December 2019, but the studio pushed the movie back to a summer release date in June, then again for October, and now, finally, will be released in theaters and HBO Max on the same day, Christmas day.

“We appreciate how patient audiences have been and given the great anticipation around ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ we are grateful to be able to make this terrifically entertaining movie widely available in these challenging times,”

-Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, said in a statement.

The announcement by Warner Bros came on Thursday, Nov 18. The decision to release the movie both in theaters and the streaming platform comes when more than 250,000 people have died from the coronavirus pandemic. The surge of new cases may deter fans from going to see it in a theater so a simultaneous streaming debut could boost numbers as well as subscriptions for HBO.

It has been reported that WW84 will not cost anything extra  to stream on HBO Max other than the monthly subscription fee of $14.99 and will be available to watch for one month within the U.S. In addition, this week, WarnerMedia announced that HBO Max would be available on Amazon’s Fire Stick. Gal Gadot, who stars as the DC Comics superhero, as well as director Patty Jenkens both posted statements on their social media accounts sharing the news of the release of their movie.

Great Throwback Aesthetic in Stark Contrast to Our Somber Times

What really sticks out in”WW84″ right now is not the diegetic loopholes, but the novel, vibrant aesthetic. With a few exceptions, DCEU movies often get criticism for their grey pallet and overly-sinister energy. Fans frequently plead for Warner Brothers to offer a bit more color and optimism to the franchise, citing Disney’s Marvel films as exemplars for comic book adaptation.

Chris Pine also returns from the original “Wonder Woman” cast, reprising his role as love-interest Steve Trevor. Conspicuously, his character unambiguously died in a plane crash at the end of the first film, but the trailer seems to find him alive and well.

From the rainbow tinted posters to the electrifying trailer, the movie is clearly invested in the 1984 setting. It looks like a disco-infused, fun-filled superhero flick, with quality humor, captivating visuals, and a strong cast to carry it along—Pedro Pascal from “The Madalorian” is playing the main villain!

If WW84 does boffo @ holiday / Christmas, using this novel approach, Chaos Walking could be a follow-up trend-extender, so stay tuned for release details closer to the official date.

The film is inspired by the 2008 book “The Knife of Never Letting Go” by Patrick Ness, the first of his Chaos Walking series.  Set in the future, Daisy Ridley plays character Viola, who crash lands on another planet, a planet in which all the women have disappeared.  All the men have been infected with “the Noise” germ, that put their thoughts on display.  Viola teams up with Tom Hollands character, Todd Hewitt and vows to protect her, all the while learning to channel “his own inner power and unlock the planet’s dark secrets,” per Lionsgate’s description.

Chaos Walking began filming back in the beautiful, pre-pandemic days of 2017, for the originally planned March 2019 release.  Because the two stars were also juggling other movies, Tom Holland filming Spider-Man and Daisy Ridley busy filming Star Wars, it was difficult to get the leads to finalize all production until 2020.

Along with Ridley and Holland, Chaos Walking boasts a stacked cast that also includes Nick Jonas, Mads Mikkelsen, Cynthia Erivo, David Oyelowo, Kurt Sutter, and Demián Bichir.

‘Culture Warlords” writer goes catfishing to unmask the Enduring Power of White Supremacy in America

Above: Photo Collage / Lynxotic

What does it take to expose the tactics of online hate mongers?

Talia Lavin, describes herself as a “schlubby, bisexual Jew living in Brooklyn” and as an unapologetic anti-racist.  She has contributed her writing on right-wing activities to major publication outlets including The Washington Post, The New Yorker, New Republic and more. As a result, Lavin describes having been a frequent target for extremists. For her latest book, “Culture Warlords”,  she created fictitious online characters and identity in order to infiltrate and better understand how and why this radical subculture (i.e. white nationalism) is started and expose it.

In an article for the Daily Beast, she told the reporter:  “There is no economic class, education level, or geographical region that is not part of the organized racist movement,” and continued  “These people are from every walk of life. There are a lot of reasons for anger, and the people I have reported on take natural feelings of loneliness and turn them on vulnerable and marginalized people. And that’s what makes me angrier. They are human people making human choices to do evil.”

Her success in being accepted into the community, and with key members, was based on using one of her created characters, a sexy, blond, alter ego to gain trust and pry honest statements from her targets. The shockingly racist and extreme admissions of hate and even criminal “dreams” they expressed seemed to more than make up for the unorthodox catfish-like charade she used to gain their trust.

Needless to say with her real identity now known, and her first hand descriptions in the book out in the public sphere, she has all the more reason to fear backlash or acts of revenge. Her courage in taking on this dangerous task, and then speaking and writing about it, is heroic, to say the least.

Her wish for readers to take away from her book is this is an important issue and something that can and should be fought for, as Americans, it is our responsibility to speak out. She ends her interview saying, “we need a lot more anti-fascists out there.”

Culture Warlords: My Journey Into the Dark Web of White Supremacy

Culture Warlords is the story of how Lavin, a frequent target of extremist trolls (including those at Fox News), dove into a byzantine online culture of hate and learned the intricacies of how white supremacy proliferates online. Within these pages, she reveals the extremists hiding in plain sight online: Incels. White nationalists. White supremacists. National Socialists. Proud Boys. Christian extremists.

In order to showcase them in their natural habitat, Talia assumes a range of identities, going undercover as a blonde Nazi babe, a forlorn incel, and a violent Aryan femme fatale. Along the way, she discovers a whites-only dating site geared toward racists looking for love, a disturbing extremist YouTube channel run by a fourteen-year-old girl with over 800,000 followers, the everyday heroes of the antifascist movement, and much more.

By combining compelling stories chock-full of catfishing and gate-crashing with her own in-depth, gut-wrenching research, she also turns the lens of anti-Semitism, racism, and white power back on itself in an attempt to dismantle and decimate the online hate movement from within. Shocking, humorous, and merciless in equal measure, Culture Warlords explores some of the vilest subcultures on the Web-and shows us how we can fight back.

Spooky Halloween in a Deserted Vegas and Classic Songs to Enjoy

Above: Photo Collage / Lynxotic

The 31st undoubtedly will look a little different this year for many, as some states throughout the US, including California, have put limits and restrictions on traditional Halloween events (i.e. door to door “trick or treating” for candy). Although some events and attractions have been cancelled or closed due to the ongoing pandemic, listening to scary songs or getting creative with a virtual Halloween themed party is still very much on the table and can be a scary good time.

In Las Vegas, where, unfortunately there’s a lack of tourists and some occupancy restrictions, there are still beautiful, seasonal sights to be seen… Here are a few examples from Bellagio:

[gdgallery_gallery id_gallery=”31″]

Check out the clips below, where you can listen and watch the music videos we’ve compiled to create the ultimate Halloween playlist. It’s a great way to groove into the Halloween season this October!

1. Time for the “Monster Mash”

The monster mash – bobby “boris” pickett

This novelty song first came out in the early 60’s, and yet it has been remade by the likes of The Beach Boys and punk band The MisFits. The song is narrated by a scientist whose monster rises from the dead to preform a new dance…. “the monster mash”.

2. Who you Gonna Call? “Ghostbusters!”

walk the moon

The Ghostbuster theme song and opening song to the 1984 movie about a team of scientists who, upon accidentally opening a gateway to another dimension and releasing evil spirits to the city, become “ghostbusters”.

3. Stumble into the Rocky Horror “Time Warp”

time warp

Time Warp stems from the horror, rock, comedy, musical, cult favorite movie about a couple that come across an eerie mansion after their car has a flat tire. The night is filled with wild and bizarre characters, including the likes of the one and only Dr. Frank-N-Furter.

4. ‘Cause this is “Thriller!” Thriller Night!

thriller – michael jackson.

In a nearly 14 minute long song, translated into a horror musical, Michael Jackson, while walking home after a movie, is confronted by zombies, gets turned into one, and dances with the horde of the undead.

5. And Let’s Not Forget . . . “The Addams Family”

the addams family – vic mizzy

The theme song for “The Addams Family” was composed for the 1960’s TV sitcom and has been reused throughout its various iterations across time. The family is comprised of Morticia, Gomez, Wednesday, Pugsley, Lurch, Grandma, Uncle Fester and Cousin Itt.

6. Ever Feel Like “Somebody’s Watching Me”?

somebody’s watching me – rockwell

The song shows a paranoid man, perfect for the Halloween season, with a haunted house theme filled with a floating head, gravestones, ravens and a freaky shower scene reminiscent of the movie Psycho.

7. The Strange One-Eyed “Purple People Eater” Just Wants to Rock ‘N’ Roll in the Band Just like the Rest of Us

purple people eater – sheb wooley

How more bizarre and quintessential for this coming holiday than a one-eye, one-horned, flying, purple people-eater, a strange creature that comes down to earth to be in a rock ‘n’ roll band.

8. “This Is Halloween!” “This Is Halloween!”

this is halloween – danny elfman

The anthem sang by Halloween Town residents in the 1993 animated movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.

9. Does a Special Someone Haunt Your Mind? “I Put A Spell on You”

i put a spell on you – screamin’ jay hawkins

This music video is very freaky, channeling a voodoo like mood, casting a spell on a “special” someone and sporting his skull in tow.

In Cook with Me, Alex revives the recipes she grew up with, such as her mom’s chicken with barbecue sauce and her dad’s steamed pork dumplings, offers recipes for foods that she wishes she grew up with, such as comforting and cheesy baked ziti, and details dishes new to her repertoire, including sheet pan pork chops with spicy Brussels sprouts and a roasted sweet potato salad with honey and toasted pumpkin seeds. The Short and Tragic Life of Quibi: Obituary for a Hollywood Experiment

PHOTO COLLAGE / LYNXOTIC

The unconventional streaming service is done – a flameout less than seven months after launching

On October 21stThe Wall Street Journal caught a whiff that a certain young video streaming service was about to bite the dust. Rumors turned out to be true, as the hardly six-month-old Quibi shut down that same day.

Quibi was an unconventional streaming service from its very beginning, a risky idea from Hollywood veterans Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman. Conceptualized in August 2018, their idea was to create a streaming platform dedicated to short-term content on mobile screens. The founders figured that people might appreciate “quick bites” of entertainment on the go— hence the service’s name.

Read More: Quibi Gone after Shortest Stint in Streaming History: WSJ Reports

Although the idea was irregular, Katzenberg and Whitman were still able to work their magic and build up hype for the product. In the months leading up to its April 2020 launch, Quibi ads were everywhere, many of them featuring notable celebrities. The moguls behind the project also raised over $1.75 billion from high-profile investors and garnered an additional $150 million in ad revenue from the likes of Pepsi and Walmart. In the final hours before its release, Quibi was starting to look like a forthcoming underdog success story.

But when the launch happened, audiences quickly realized some issues with Quibi. It lacked particularly alluring content; the small-screen “Turnstyle” optimization was unusual; many questioned, “Why pay money for such a service when there are so many free mobile streaming destinations like YouTube or TikTok?”

Evidently, Quibi was off to a rough start, but the road only got rockier. In May, a lawsuit emerged as the video company Eko sued Quibi for infringing on a patent for the “Trurnstyle” technology.

Now with heavy criticism and a legal battle on their hands, Quibi’s viewership also started to dwindle. The number of subscribers was actually disappointing from the very beginning, but the figures really started declining around Quibi’s three-month birthday, when the service’s lengthy free trial was running out.

Why did it fail? And what does it means for streaming to come?

According to The Verge, one report estimated that Quibi lost ninety percent of its subscribers in July, just when they were all supposed to start paying the monthly fee: $4.99 with ads, $7.99 without ads.

All of these factors could have played into Quibi’s premature demise this week. However, the formal announcement, penned in a letter from Katzenberg and Whitman, blamed the coronavirus. While COVID-19 has helped other streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ boom, forcing audiences to seek home entertainment as theaters closed, it has done the opposite for Quibi.

Essentially, part of Quibi’s appeal was to attract a mobile audience— people who were riding trains or sitting in waiting rooms. Now that most people are working from home and avoiding public spaces, a short piece of visual narrative watched from a smartphone does not seem as appealing, even if the service did just launch its first TV app a few days ago.

Read More: Read More: Quibi Shifts Gears Following Rough Start: Katzenberg Blames Underperformance On Coronavirus

The other part of Katzenberg and Whitman’s letter stressed how Quibi could not carry on as a stand-alone company. Allegedly, the partners tried getting Apple, WarnerMedia, Facebook, and NBCUniversal to acquire Quibi, but no one was buying. Thus, they had no choice but to close up shop.

Quibi stood as a big Hollywood experiment from the get go. Although both of its founders were well experienced in the entertainment industry, a small-screen subscription based streaming service would be considered a bold endeavor for anyone to sell.

We can blame Quibi’s failures on timing, pandemics, competition, or simple over-ambition, but in the end, the only hard truth is that the platform lasted a very short time. Perhaps the shortest time ever for a recognizable streaming service.

Sometimes, Hollywood rewards audacity, like when a young director breaks the rules or a studio chooses to invest in a chancy intellectual property. However, for every Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” or Disney’s acquisition of Marvel, there are a million projects that didn’t make it. Sadly, Quibi is one of them.

In the streaming war, an ongoing battle where Disney+ and Netflix seem to be winning while HBOMax, AppleTV+, and NBCUniversal’s Peacock hold their ground, Quibi will go down as the young, daring private, sent out by senior officers to storm the trenches, only to take one in the gut early on.

We will never know what it could have been, and there may be others like it to come. For now, though, Quibi may be a cautionary tale for entertainment executives, one that has alas met a hasty epilogue.

“Kiss The Ground” Documentary Offers Hopeful Remedy to Climate Change by Focusing on Soil Regeneration

The answer lies in the dirt, or as the movie’s tagline states, “The Solution Is Right Under Our Feet.”

At a time when so many existential, even extinction level issues  [climate change] loom and threaten mankind, it is easy to feel helpless and even hopeless. And, yet, in the most unexpected way imaginable, a simple act such as opening up the Netflix app and choosing a documentary could be the first step towards a new way of thought and, indeed, action.

The new documentary “Kiss The Ground” does not minimize climate change, or downplay the fact that it is persistent and would bring terrible catastrophes looming on the global horizon, it does not fixate on the negatives. Instead, it offers a rare and amazing thing: solutions to solve the problems and rebalance Earth’s ecosystem. And it does so in a direct, simple and amazingly uplifting manner.

Click photo for more on “Kiss the Ground

“Kiss The Ground” emphasizes regenerative soil usage and smart agriculture as the keys to saving the planet. Taking the audience to farms and ecosystems all across the world, the doc illustrates how humans have squandered the Earth’s natural bounty by over-tilling the land and drenching crops in pesticides.

Contrary to popular belief, these conventional farming tactics are not only damaging the environment, but they are also hurting the agricultural economy, leaving crops vulnerable and unsustainable in the event of a disaster. The film explains that these tactics are depleting fertile land, and if we don’t change our methods, the planet will only have sixty more years of harvests left.

Salvation is not beyond reach, though. As aforementioned, the bulk of the documentary is optimistic, and it offers a solution in an unlikely place. Namely, carbon.

[Carbon dioxide] is usually the enemy in [environmental documentaries], as we have far too much of it trapped in our atmosphere and the [fossil fuel industry] pumps it out at alarming rates to our planet’s detriment. Although an excess of carbon in the air could be the planet’s doom, “Kiss The Ground” suggests that increasing carbon in the ground could be a solution.

Through extreme close ups, microscopic images, and a few animations, the documentary shows how healthy soil is rife with living things. These things (worms, bacteria, microbes, etc.) all need carbon to live and play a vital part at the base of the food chain.

Unfortunately, the pesticides and over-tilling actively destroy these organisms, rendering the land naturally defenseless. The movie thus calls for a shift towards using soil with increased organic matter that sucks in and sustains carbon. According to one farmer in the film, every one percent increase in the dirt’s organic matter equals ten tons of carbon per acre. This means cleaner air, healthier ecosystems, and a more sustainable form of agriculture that could combat [global warming].

Many farmers have already endorsed this organic method on macro scales. “Kiss The Ground” even brings audiences to China’s [Loess Plateau], a once luscious place rendered a desert through centuries of depletion. With a rejuvenated focus on land management and organic prioritization in recent decades, however, the Plateau has effectively rebounded. Now the brown landscape is once again an Edenic green.

The change does not only have to happen on farms and distant, rural lands, though. The documentary also takes viewers to [San Francisco] and [Haiti] to show how urban hubs are playing their part, stressing the importance of composting and not letting anything go to waste. Seemingly everything—right down to human feces—can be reused and repurposed for a more sustainable world.

In the end, the people of this film – the farmers, scientists and concerned celebrities, come across almost as walking, talking, living, breathing testimonials for the solutions they are proposing.

In a world where the future will almost certainly hold either oblivion and human extinction, or, if we join together to create it, an almost Utopian rebirth they are the rare exception and point clearly toward a better way for us to live on this planet.

Seeing those who made and collaborated on this film and how they live and interact during their quest to save themselves and all of us,  it becomes possible to believe in these solutions, and more importantly in human-kind’s ability to choose the right path for a future.

Tying together the sound, simple yet incredibly powerful ideas of recreating Soil health and Regenerative Agriculture, together with sustainable energy and transportation, the road to survival and hope has never looked so feasible. However, with sustainable energy being more widely known and understood as a priority, it is the ideas in “Kiss The Ground” that most need to be shared and disseminated most urgently. Watch it, then pass the word

Environmental authors, activists, and documentarians Josh and Rebecca Tickell directed and produced “Kiss The Ground.” The duo also wrote the film with help from Johnny O’Hara. Meanwhile, actor [Woody Harrelson] narrates and celebrity appearances include [Tom Brady], Gisel Bündchen, Ian Somerhandler, Jason Mraz, and California Governor [Gavin Newsom]. There are also dozens of farmers, scientists, and notable environmental scholars featured in the picture.

Earthquake Preparation for the ‘Big’ One – not if but when

Living on an earthquake fault line has all Southern California residents thinking about the next big one…

Living in Southern California we all know that earthquakes can happen at anytime. As a matter of fact, small shocks happen all day, everyday. Every year California experiences around 10,000 tremors, most of them small. Perhaps around 100 per year are above 3.0 and fifteen to twenty are above 4.0.

It is also important to understand how the size and strength of quakes are measured. The richter scale, once used to measure the strength of earthquakes, has now mostly been superseded by the Moment Magnitude scale (Mw), which measures an earthquake of Mw  7.0 at 1000 times as much energy as one of 5.0 and about 32 times that of 6.0.

Read More: 6.5 Magnitude Earthquake hits Nevada/California border, Felt by Thousands

Another example would be: A magnitude 8.7 earthquake is 23,000 times stronger than a magnitude 5.8 earthquake. This massive difference in strength (as opposed to size, which is measured differently) is the reason why anything above 7.0 is very serious and can do great damage if in a highly populated area, while an 8.0, for example, could be catastrophic.

Now That We Have Your Attention: Some Earthquake Preparedness Advice

Many simple things can help to reduce any possible damage to your home or, more importantly, harm to yourself and your loved ones.

Just as you wouldn’t want a bookshelf to accidentally fall on your baby, in an earthquake, furniture and especially appliances can be dangerous to anyone in the house.

Prepare for an earthquake in advance by using “baby-straps” that can be purchased at any hardware outlet, and use them to secure shelves, televisions and appliances like microwaves. People can be injured or even killed by these heavy objects in a severe quake.

Making sure your bed is not near any windows can help avoid broken glass. Use picture frames with clear plastic instead of glass in halls and stairways to make sure your exit route will be safe.

At least a few fire extinguishers should be ready in known locations around the house. As you can imagine, emergency lights in the bedroom and in various other places are essential. These can be battery powered, emergency crank, or even solar as long as they store a charge, in case the quake hits at night, or power is out for days, or even weeks.

And, while we are on the subject of electricity, if services are interrupted in your area, many things we rely on daily will also potentially be unavailable. Gas pumps need power, so it is always smart to keep at least one vehicle with the tank at more than half full.

“The real trick is: do these things now, don’t get caught wishing you had.”

– K.L.

Gas water heaters or any propane tanks are also potentially dangerous. Your gas heater or water heater must also be secured. An automatic valve that will sense any vibration beyond a certain threshold will help prevent fires that can be caused when an active gas line breaks during an earthquake.

At minimum, be sure to know how to manually shut off your gas. This is usually done with a wrench, or a tool can be attached to the valve area to be sure you have it handy.

Keep some spare shoes near the bed to slip on, in case you awaken to debris and even broken glass. Cell phone service might be out, but even if it is working you will need charged phones. Cell battery back-ups are cheap these days and can be a life saver. For longer outages, if you do not have a generator, even a solar / emergency crank phone – a usb charger which is rechargeable by solar and hand crank can be great.

As can be seen by the common sense tips listed so far, much of these ideas can be thought of by just imagining what the situation could be like in the direct aftermath of an earthquake. The real trick is: do these things now, don’t get caught wishing you had.

Here are a few more tips:

  • Download maps in .pdf format and store on a laptop (keep it charged). Or just get some of those old fashioned paper maps.
  • Learn CPR: go to a class and be the one ready to save those around you.
  • For homeowners: check the structural integrity of your foundation. Double-check your earthquake insurance policy.
  • Keep extra water (lots of it) in your home as well as food and other supplies such as medicine, first aid kit and other essentials. Keep empty, safe water containers around to fill for extra H2O. Enough for at least a week or two is advised
  • Be sure that there is some cash hidden for this occasion; ATM machines can also be out for extended periods after a very large temblor.

If you implement the majority of the various suggestions described above, you are way ahead of most, and have much better chances of survival in the event of an earthquake emergency.

What to do immediately after a quake:

To panic or to rush is always dangerous. You can’t outrun an earthquake. If you are in public, such as at a movie theater, concert or sporting event, get down onto the floor and protect your head and upper body.

If in a large building, drop and cover, under a sturdy desk or table and hold on until the shaking stops. Stay away from windows and elevators.

When you are already outdoors, or if you can easily reach an open area, if it is safe to get there, stay away from anything that could cause harm – power-lines, billboards, buildings, even cars and trucks.

If near the ocean and the quake has a large enough magnitude to cause significant damage on land, a tsunami is a real possibility. Get to high ground, further inland, 2 miles or more. Driving is unlikely to be feasible, so hike to a spot more than 100 feet above sea level.

West Coast in Excessive “Record-Setting” Holiday Heat – Rest of Nation not spared

Climate Change is potentially responsible for creating scorching temperatures and health hazards

A record-breaking heat wave is coming. Moving in today and peaking to coincide with the upcoming Labor Day weekend, excessive heat watches and resulting warnings are ready go into effect. From Friday, September 4th, throughout the Southwest and particularly on the West Coast temperatures are expected to range from 104 to 117 degrees, especially in cities like Las Vegas and Phoenix.  These all-time high seasonal temperatures will last throughout the holiday including Monday.

With excessive heat, the National Weather Service’s in Los Angeles posted an official warning that it “is not recommended to spend any extended period outside during the heat of the day.”

The Weather Service also warned residents that there is higher risk for heat illnesses along with heightened fire weather concerns during this time. Near normal temperatures are likely to return by the end of next week.

Southwest States not alone as entire Nation in climate crisis crosshairs

The increased temperatures are said to be worse than the recent heat wave, in August, that hit California and which also resulted in widespread destructive wildfires.  These extreme hot and dry conditions will further complicate matters for firefighters that continue to battle active fires. To date th current rash of fires have been responsible for more than 7,000 fires that have burned nearly 1.4 million acres of land.

The extreme changes to the climate make for heat waves to last longer and be more intense. It’s not just the West and Southwest effected by the weather. Other regions of the United States are also set to face extreme weather in the next coming days, with approximately 20 million people in the mid-Atlantic facing threats of severe storms.  Those in parts of the South and Midwest that make up nearly 4 million people will be under flash flood advisories.

“From a hazards perspective, it is the Desert Southwest and throughout California’s Great Valley that stand out most with record breaking high temps likely this weekend and into early next week.”

Michelle Obama at her most relatable: says she’s experiencing low-grade depression

https://video-lynxotic.akamaized.net/Michelle-Obama-Master.mov
video clip from michelle obama podcast

In her latest podcast she dishes on feelings brought on the current state of the world…

The former first lady, Michelle Obama spoke with her friend Michele Norris on the second episode of her new podcast and shared an incredibly relatable feeling for many of us… she’s dealing with “some form of low-grade depression”.

Many public figures don’t make it a point to discuss private and personal matters like mental health. With so much going on in the world, it is extremely helpful and insightful to know that that most people wouldn’t be feeling “normal” or happy, based on the experiences of a “famous person”. Such a presence like Michelle Obama speaking out and giving depression and mental health anecdotes, culled from her deeply personal experiences, in general is much appreciated. Such generous sharing of her feelings could potentially help people to de-stigmatize depression.

A timely message we can all take to heart

Obama was able as always to beautifully articulate the turmoil that the world has been experiencing: coronavirus, racial strife, and the Trump administration and how it has taken a toll on her.

“Not just because of the quarantine, but because of the racial strife, and just seeing this administration, watching the hypocrisy of it, day in and day out, is dispiriting.”

michelle obama

As only Michelle Obama can, in her podcast she talks about staying optimistic and hopeful during these turbulent times, and gave the sage advice to always listen to your spirit and body and take the time to recharge.

Do Keto Diets live up to the Radical Weight Loss Hype? The Basics of what you Need to Know

Deconstructing “Ketogenic”, “Keto” and “Ketosis”…

The Ketogenic Diet, popularly referred to as simply “Keto”, is on top of the list of many well-known ways in which people have lost weight by eating food low in carbs. The ketogenic diet isn’t actually anything new and has been utilized for centuries, most commonly used to help diabetes. The diet was also introduced in the 1920’s as treatment for epilepsy in children, as well as tested with people who have cancer, polycystic ovary syndrome (POS) and Alzheimer’s.

Yet, as a popular way to lose weight, Keto can’t take all the credit, since the rise in stature can be largely attributed to The Atkins Diet, which started around the 1970’s and commercialized the low-carb/high protein diet structure. Due to the initial success of The Atkins Diet, many other low carb diets and variations have been put on the map – such as Keto, Paleo, South Beach and The Dukan Diet to name just a few. So what makes Keto different? The Keto diet stands out from the other low-carb diets because you eat a much higher fat content, which accounts for as much as 70-80% of your food intake and usually, in contrast to other low carb diets, involves also eating only a moderate amount of protein.

The general idea is for your eating plan to include more calories derived from proteins and fat and less from carbohydrates.  With a low-carb diet, your body will eventually run out of fuel, usually taken from blood sugar (glucose), which will result in your body starting to break down proteins and fat for energy instead and that will result in weight loss.  This metabolic process, described here in a nut-shell, is called ketosis.

Whether you want to just dip your feet in the pooland try out some Keto recipes, or go full hog (pun intended), we have provided some book titles on the most popular books relating to Keto.

What to Eat

  • Meat (Fish, Beef, Poultry)
  • Leafy Green Vegetables (Spinach, Kale)
  • Eggs and Diary (Cheese, Cream, Butter)
  • Oils
  • Nuts and Seeds
  • Avocados
  • Broccoli and Cauliflower
  • Berries
  • Water

What NOT to Eat

  • Bread (Flour, Wheat, Rice, Cereal)
  • Pasta
  • Starches (like Potatoes and Yams)
  • Sugar
  • high Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Corn
  • Legumes and Beans
  • Fruit (exception is Berries)
  • Soda
  • Milk (has milk sugar)

Being on a ketogenic diet is meant for the short term, rather than permanent, with the main focus being on losing weight and should not be done as a long-term lifestyle diet. This is because there have been some noted and potentially unhealthy takeaways from the diet; one that the diet heavily relies on red meat and other fat-rich processed, high-salt foods that are not optimum for daily consumption.  In addition, there have not been enough long term studies to conclude if the the short-term results of weight loss will last or if, after resuming carb intake, the pound will be put right back on again.

Since The Keto Diet has been around for a long time, there’s no shortage of books and cookbooks on the topic. However there are now many new and different ways to incorporate Keto, with an offshoot of systems for non-meat eaters, including vegan and vegetarian options. This is surprising, since when Keto comes to mind, it is normal first to picture high-protein animal products like meat, eggs and cheese at the forefront of what can be eaten on the diet. Knowing that you can have plant-based alternatives to choose from and incorporate for Keto is refreshing, and just might remove some of the biggest potential drawbacks mentioned above.

Ketotarian includes more than 75 recipes that are vegetarian, vegan, or pescatarian, offering a range of delicious and healthy choices for achieving weight loss, renewed health, robust energy, and better brain function. Dr. Will Cole comes to the rescue with Ketotarian, which has all the fat-burning benefits without the antibiotics and hormones that are packed into most keto diets.

The Mediterranean Diet : Easy Eating that promotes Life-long Health

The World’s Best Diet is not really a “Diet”

A lot of us have been spending much more time at home due to the isolation safety measures and business restrictions due to  COVID-19. If you’re like me – that also means you’re eating much more than usual too (easy and fast access to the kitchen, right?). If you are looking for a change in your eating plan that is also heart-healthy, the Mediterranean diet might be right for you.

The US News And World Report proclaimed the Mediterranean diet the top rated and best overall diet for 2019 and 2020 among the total 41 other popular diets evaluated by a panel of experts in diet, health and nutrition.

The diet traditionally has been meant for foods, flavors and cooking methods that are available and readily utilized in the countries that surround the Mediterranean Sea. There isn’t an exact meal plan or recipe that can pinpoint or pay homage to that which is “The Mediterranean Diet”, however most meals are known to be rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and nuts, with olive oil used as the primary source of fat. Meals are therefore more plant-based rather than meat-based; red meat is not eaten often and very infrequent if so, instead, seafood and poultry serve as principal protein sources, and even so in moderation. Dairy of cheese and yogurt are also often eaten daily. Even wine is customary in moderate amounts with each meal.

Mediterranean diet consists of  very minimal if any processed foods, utilizing fresh and locally grown sources that are in season, this could be seen as a stark contrast to some of the more Westernize meals where there is access to heavily processed, “fast foods” and imported goods. The Mediterranean diet does leave room for indulgence, so a little piece of cake, or soda isn’t off the table, however the key is in the moderation.

The options for meals are plentiful and never boring, since the emphasis is on fresh, your plate will always be booming with color.

 Do Like the Mediterraneans’ Do…

Implementing any type of food program is one parts eating the right foods, but also a big part on one’s mentality and attitude. This isn’t a type of diet where calories have to be counted, nor is overly restrictive in what you can or cannot eat, which can be extremely important for longevity and the desire to keep up healthy eating habits.

There is also a lifestyle element attached to the Mediterranean “diet” that is also strongly associated with all the mental and physical benefits.  First, this includes having an active lifestyle, walking is central with many Mediterraneans’, however any daily physical activity will do.  In addition, creating social interactions with other is also core, this can mean having a family dinner, or meeting with friends and using meals as an occasion to share and engage with others.

  • Eat fruits and vegetables daily
  • Use olive oil for healthy fats
  • Eat fish and poultry or beans and eggs versus red meat
  • Incorporate whole grains
  • Reduce sugar intake
  • Drink wine instead of beer or other liquor
  • Add spices to add extra flavor to any dish without the need for too much salt
